The Red and White game yesterday was fun (ish) to watch. Guys working hard to get jobs. Noticeably absent were Dylan Larkin and Mike Green. Andreas Athanasiou left about halfway through and didn’t return. Coach Blashill is calling it “tweaks” and “precautionary measures”. It leaves a bad feeling in the stomach all around.

So far, we’ve seen injuries to Alec Regula and now 2 of our top forwards. In a desperate attempt to catch some hockey last night, I tuned in to Arizona vs Vegas. For a team (AZ) that was wrecked with injuries last year, this was a bad game to watch. 2 guys out in the first period. Headshots, both of them. One received a 10 minute misconduct and one didn’t get anything (Pacioretty, who then dominated the game). Las Vegas had a steady stream of guys going to the box for charging, boarding, roughing, etc.

It is an absolute waste. Pacioretty is a competitor, and rightly so. But, this game was out of control. Kids are fighting for jobs, and landing on IR in your first preseason game or out of camp is a huge setback.

It sounds like Oliver Ekman Larsson is having some “tweaks” as well. Another game like this one and AZ could be right back to where they were. The Red Wings are playing Chicago tomorrow night and I’m almost scared to watch. How many kids are going to end up on IR? How many careers will be derailed and possibly destroyed during the preseason. The Wings have 9 games, 6 in 7 nights. I’m not optimistic. It’s a ridiculous work load and begs the question of how much is too much? We’ll soon see.

I think they should reduce pre-season games to 5-6 rather than 9

nobody plays in every game. the players battling for a spot might play 5 or 6. Everybody else will play about half. Am I right in assuming the pre-season will end with a home and home Det vs Tor again this year? Won't be receiving any injuries from the Leafs. The only they hit is the back of the net with pucks.

Nobody plays them all, but the young guys can play the bulk of them. the prospects tourney already cost Chicago (Chicago lost their 3rd overall pick to injury there, Kirby Dach). Frans Nielsen is out with concussion now. Arizona had 3 guys knocked out of their first game versus Vegas. It’s just a huge waste to see this stuff start piling up already. At least make sure guys don’t play consecutive days. Detroit had Seider play 3 times in 4 days or so. It’s just way too much. Ya, we do see you guys twice. And ya, you’ll probably fill the net well.
