It's not every year you get to see a thrilling 1st vs. 8th series in the Western conference. The majority of the time the 1st place teams tends to take it without feeling any affects of displeasure. But last year, the presidents trophy winner (Detroit) was upset in the 1st round to a surprising Edmonton Oilers team. This year Calgary looks to do the same and despite several people going against it, the Flames do have a good chance.

If Kiprusoff and the Flames have any chance at defeating the steaming hot wings, they need to win on the road. After a poor start on the road this season the Flames have finally started to pick it up and what better time to do it then at the final month of the regular season. Although Calgary has struggled in their past few games, don't expect the same style of hockey in the playoffs. Calgary is a natural born playoff team, especially with Kipprusoff between the pipes. In the season series between these 2 teams, the Flames went 2-2 and for some reason they tend to play good and pitch in a lot more offensively against the Wings.

It'll be a goalie showdown for sure and you can expect the games to be low scoring. This series will be a battle of who can score more and defend more as both these teams have shown those capabilities. The Flames defeated the Wings in round 2 of the 2004 Stanley cup playoffs. Although the Wings have played better hockey all season, questions will rise to whether or not the Flames can with hold the Red Wings strong offense and hand them their second consecutive upset. My pick for this series is Calgary in 6 games. Kiprusoff will outplay Hasek and the offense of Calgary will come through.

What are your predictions?
