The Los Angeles Kings did their very best to put the Red Wings to sleep early Friday night at the Joe Louis Arena. Instead, it was the hockey fans across the country who were dozing off and begging both teams to shoot the puck. Darren Helm answered the prayer of many by not letting this game continue into overtime, by outmuscling Drew Doughty for position in front of the net and firing home a Franzen feed with 1:13 left in the game.

The Kings, a team fighting for their playoffs lives, simply did not play desperate hockey. Going into the third period tied 2-2, the Kings got their first shot of the final frame with 6:45 to go. That is unacceptable. They did not generate enough sustained pressure in the offensive zone and the goals they did come by were quite fortunate.

The Kings newest pretty boy, Jeff Carter figure skated around the front of the net before poking Kopitar's shot off the post past Joey MacDonald at 7:29 of the first period. Justin Williams skated around Kronwall and fired one-in from a sharp angle in the late minutes of the first frame, while Dwight King banged in Carter's rebound at 14:09 of the third period.

To be fair, the injury-riddled Red Wings had their fans scratching their heads for most of the night as well. Detroit could not set up on their powerplay, going 0 for 3 on the night and they were only able to throw 15 shots at King's netminder Jonathan Quick. Zetterberg, Filppula, Hudler, Smith and MacDonald seemed to be the only players on the ice for Detroit.

Great Play of the Game
15:37 of 2nd - Filppula shows off some slick moves by forcing his way through the neutral zone with Justin Williams on his back, dekes through Drew Doughty and passes it off to Zetterberg for a tap-in. Filppula could show Datsyuk some moves when he returns to the line-up!

Great Turnover
Mike Richards and Drew Doughty seem to have an aversion to the puck. Flyers fans were fed up with Richard's no-look passes into traffic in his final years in Orange and Black. Thoughts Kings Fans?

Great Hit
5:35 of 2nd - Alec Martinez absolutely crushes Dan Cleary as he fumbles with the puck at the Kings blueline.

Great Save
MacDonald stones both Bash Brothers, Jeff Carter and Mike Richards in the final seconds of the game.

Great Tweets
PuckDucky - Justin Williams dancing around Kronwall, and not getting Kronwall'd.

theroyalhalf - Justin Williams is slowly leading the league in awful goals scored.

LeeSutton4 - As Shakespeare once said: Shoot the dam puck! #DRWChat @DetroitRedWings

Teams in the West are going to have to scramble, fight, and sacrifice to get into the playoffs. King's fans did not see their team do that tonight. If they are not going to make the playoffs, then they should atleast give their fans for the rest of the season some playoff hockey!

Cheers
