Mr. Snider

Has there been a better 'owner' of a sports franchise in Philadelphia over the past fifty years than Mr. Snider?

*He had the faith in the city to learn and embrace a sport new to most of them and went out and found the backing and ignored the risks... And made it happen.

*He brought in the right people and for the most part has succeeded to maintain a quality management team.

*He has built two arenas without much civic help above land rights, and spring-boarded that into a major entertainment facility and corporation.

*He dictated the manner in which the team would carry itself; that being one that would never be pushed around.

*He has had under his watch the second best winning percentage in the history of the NHL, with the only dark stretch during his absence.

*He has made sure that the franchise has had what it needed financially to give it the best chance for success.

*He made sure his selling of shares of ownership allowed him to keep the organization under his control.

*He has not backed away from taking chances if he felt it gave them a better chance to move forward; recent example Pronger trade.

*He has been loyal, at times to a fault, yet has fired his natural son (Jay) and assumed son (Clarke) when he felt he had to.

*He has maintained ownership and/or operational control over the better part of forty plus seasons over a six decade span. Over that time no other franchise has come close to having that.

*He has seen his franchise compete in Seven League Championships Series to date and over a dozen Conference Championship Series (14?)

*He has kept past players employed in the Organization and has embraced them as an extended family.

*He has watched over a local team that has had to endure less heat from the fans and Media than the other major sports teams in the Area have, due largely to the Flyers almost always being competative.

... The list goes on and on.

Before I am roasted here I acknowledge many failures and faults, not the least of which being the 35+ years since a Cup and at times having too much loyalty. Yes, the team has had it's detractors and people complain about their Goaltending stance since Hextall.

This however is to give him credit for what he has accomplished in the Philadelphia Area and for the fans of the Flyers.

As they are now a single game away from yet one more SCF, one that only time will tell if they win... both the ECF clinching game and/or the Cup... And we see how he has overseen so many correct moves such as bringing in Pronger and Laviolette, and has been on the right side of some breaks. Now we have seen his team do what only three others in all of the major sports histories have done, and we see the Area again embrace the Flyers, being so proud of them. As they have a great shot to move on, this is a perfect time, IMO, to salute Mr. Snider... no matter what happens after today.

Flyers almost ruined the game with their decision to commit penalties on every single play in the 70's to try to win, knowing that the refs would never call all of them. Still a classless bunch of losers, second only to the Montreal Diving team.

This team, this organization is a rare thing. A Dying breed. A team and a Family. We show loyalty to those who sacrifice. Those who bleed on our ice in our trenches are never forgotten.Go Flyers.

I LOVE the fact that he has given Lifetime jobs to the likes of Bernie Parent and the old Broad Street Bullies. His loyalty to the people who have done well by him is obvious. Ed Snider is a Champion with or without the Cup in Philly. Philly is lucky to have a man like him...
