When asked about his approach to signing #1 RFA Tomas Vanek, Darcy Regier held firm.

“I don’t believe in operating out of fear,” said Regier. “Tomas is a Restricted Free Agent and will have a market value that we’ll go from there.”

Interesting stance by Darcy but I can;’t say I’m surprised. It’s going to take a $4million plus offer to get Vanek out of Buffalo and I would bet that Regier might like the idea of the 3 first round picks.

All those high picks would go along way towards Buffalo staying competitive for the long term.

Rumor has it that it’s a lock for Vanek to get an offer or two. It will be interesting!

Although draft choices are never a lock it is a good possibility that the majority will pan out to become everyday players. That coupled with the fact that it would free up money to improve the d and lock up both Briere and Drury makes it tempting to let someone offer him the huge cash!

I am huge Vanek fan... and i can't believe i am saying this... but i think i agree. A cadre of 1st round picks might be a really good deal!

As a Flyers fan I would LOVE to have Vanek! He is going to be a player for a lot of years and if Regier does not try to lock him up - then all the better. I would take him in a hearbeat.

If the Flyers DO take vanek... Then the sabres would have a top 5 pick for the next three years! i'm in!

I'm sorry but I can't see giving up Vanek a future(if not already) star in the league even for future picks that no matter who the picks come there is no garuantee that they are high. If we lose him it better be for a few good players already playing in the NHL. I would like to see a Lindros to Philly type of deal.

First of all, the picks wont be top 5 every year, Philly will have a much better team THIS year and they'll contend for the playoffs.Regardless, Larry Quinn's statements are encouraging. Lindy and Darcy's were as well. What was everyone's response to why they came back? One thing in mind: the cup.Even if the Sabres lose Briere and/or Drury, there's still hope. Quinn said the Sabres budget WILL be more than last year's, not can be, WILL be. They want the cup as badly as we do. I expect the captain they spoke to was Drury. As much as it would pain me to see Briere leave, unless he takes the HUGE hometown discount, it's simply not gonna happen. Only one of those players is gonna make more than 6 million and its Drury. If Briere takes 5 or 5.5 million then great, he stays.EK is reporting that the Stars are working on a trade with a Northeast division team. Could it be Stu Barnes back to the Sabres? Wouldn't surprise me, he could come in right away and be a leader, and playoff performer. If the Sabres can get someone to take Spacek or Kotalik off their hands, they might be able to sign a good defenseman like Preissing or maybe Hannan. We'll see. Very soon.

Your right on in regard to the picks not being in the top 5 each yr but think of the possibility of having 2 1st rounders each year!I would love to see Stu Barnes back here especially if we could manage to get Kotalik/Spacek off the books!
