“And the Edmonton Oilers, with the 7th pick, picks Darnell Nurse!”

But that is not the talk of the NHL today. It was the trade between the New Jersey Devils and the Vancouver Canucks. As people know, the New Jersey Devils traded their 2013 first overall pick to the Canucks for Cory Schneider. Who won this trade? I’d say the Canucks. Dumps cap salary, still has a number one goalie, that’d work. But they also got Bo Horvot, A strong centre that plays for the London Knights in the OHL. Also on the lines of the Devils. The LA Kings traded their 7th rounder to the Devils, to pick Anthony Broduer. That has gotten my respect.

Back to the Oilers. They drafted Nurse today. I say this is a good move. Nichusikin was available for the taking, considering the Oilers also need a strong left wing. But the defence of the Oilers also needed some upgrade. And this is where Nurse came in. 6’3, 185 lbs. He may not be ready for the NHL next year (Hopefully he is!) but you’ve got Klefbom, and Belov on the point now. The defence is now taking a major upgrade. And this is good. This draft, it seemed the Oilers was building the 3rd and the 4th lines,

Who the Oilers drafted today:

1 7 DARNELL NURSE D CAN 6' 3" 185 OHL SAULT STE. MARIE
2 56 MARC-OLIVIER ROY C CAN 6' 0" 175 QMJHL BLAINVILLE-BOISBRIAND
3 83 BOGDAN YAKIMOV C RUS 6' 5" 202 RUSSIA-JR. NIZHNEKAMSK 2
3 88 ANTON SLEPYSHEV LW RUS 6' 2" 194 RUSSIA UFA
4 94 JACKSON HOUCK RW CAN 6' 0" 186 WHL VANCOUVER
4 96 KYLE PLATZER C CAN 5' 11" 185 OHL LONDON
4 113 AIDAN MUIR LW RW CAN 6' 3" 182 MWEHL VICTORY HONDA MIDGET
5 128 EVAN CAMPBELL LW CAN 6' 1" 175 BCHL LANGLEY
6 158 BEN BETKER D CAN 6' 5" 200 WHL EVERETT
7 188 GREGORY CHASE C CAN 6' 0" 195 WHL CALGARY

(Thank you to Morris for the information)

All players here except for Kyle Platzer are 6’0+. People like Yakimov, who was a great pick up this draft, he gets in the dirty areas, he can score, and his game is a power forward type of game. Slepyshev who I’ve never heard of, or seen his type of game, he’ll probably need time to develop, like everyone here. Except for maybe Nurse.

But a fourth line of:

Slepyshev-Yakimov-Muir

That’d be more down the road.

So what about now? The free agency is just around the corner, July 5th.

Here is my game plan for the Free Agency:

Sign BOS RW Nathan Horton
Sign NYR LW Ryan Clowe
Sign CHI G Ray Emery
Sign VAN C Maxim Lapierre
Sign TB C Vincent Lecavalier
Sign MTL RW Michael Ryder
Here are my suggested lines for the start of next season:

Hall-RNH-Eberle
Yakupov-Gagner-Horton
Clowe-Lecavalier-Ryder
Smyth-Lapierre-Brown

Of course, this probably won’t happen, plus the salary cap is only 64 million this season, so this wouldn’t really work. So where is Hemsky, Horcoff, Paarjavi, ect.

Like Yost suggested in one of his blogs:

OTTAWA: Zach Smith, 2nd asset

EDMONTON: Ales Hemsky

And this may be a good idea to take into consideration:

EDMONTON: Paarjavi, 2014 1st, Marcinin,

PHILIDEPLHIA: Colburn

This maybe considered overpaying, but these are unneeded players, at least on my perfect roster but it may just work.

Colburn-JR.Schultz
Smid-Petry
SR.Schultz-Belov

Also keeping Nurse/Klefbom as a 7th.

And then:

Dubynk
Emery

For the goalies.

But we will see when July 5th roles around. Who will be signed, and who will be a bust.

not bad but mostly dreaming with the free agents. We would be lucky to get emery and one other off that list of UFAs
