"Musings from a Flames Fan"
Moncton, NB • Canada • 29 Years Old • Male
Trade deadline is a week from today.
There has been so much discussion on who we (as Flames fans) want to see in a Flames jersey, who we want to see traded or let go, and what players we'd like to swap.
But what's realistic? What's practical? And, knowing Sutter's past moves, what will he likely do before the deadline?
We've heard so many rumored names coming... Sundin, Jokinen, Ryder, etc.
We've heard so many rumored names going... Tanguay, Huselius, Yelle, Warrener

So... What do you think Sutter will do this week?

I actually think that Sutter will be fairly quiet this week. I see Sutter making all the bigger moves this summer with the UFA's & at this summers' draft (a la Tanguay).

However, I think Sutter will move some of our un-productive and healthy-scratch players this week for draft picks and/or prospects/young players. I think he may move a Nilson, Primeau, Warrener, or Smith type player. Not only does it dump some (much needed '08-'09) cap space, but gives us some room to grow our farm-system and develope our prospects & younger players.

Who may go? Primeau, Warrener, Smith, Nilson, Erikkson, Hale, Yelle, Huselius

I'm just sayin'...

The Flames are certainly showing they aren't a true contender this year. Once again too inconsistent and too many poor efforts. Too old. Too slow. Another coach unable to bring all the pieces together. Horrible special teams. If this is all true, it would make sense to unload as many of the UFAs as possible, such as Huselius, Conroy, Yelle, Godard, Smith, Hale, et al and get as many picks and prospects as possible. Primeau and Nilson aren't UFAs, but trade them for, well, anything. Or waive them. I'd personally keep Tanguay and do my best to sign Langkow. Trade Warrener now, or in the off-season. Forget going after the Sundins and Boyles...this isn't going to be our year. Accept that next year will be a minor rebuild when the cap issues force a ton of youth and rookies on the team. (Maybe Giordano and Turatuken will be willing to return. Get Prust and Nystrom up full time. Maybe Backlund has an outside shot.) Give Lombardi a top job and see if he can do it. Hopefully the youth bring the effort and enthusiasm this teams seems to lack.

PLEASE trade Warrener....I wouldn't mind his uselessness if it weren't for the fact that he is being paid $2.3M. I agree with RinkLighter right now, even though this is the last year before you can start saying the R word...the Flames just aren't good enough right now. They were aptly described in the Herald today as not good enough to be considered contenders but not bad enough to be considered terrible...just utter mediocrity for another year. Sutter could prove me wrong if he makes the right moves, but other than that it looks like another first round exit or worse. I still think the only big name guy it could be worthwhile to get is Jokinen. Most likely, though, I could see Sutter getting some better secondary D (Hale and Eriksson straight up suck) and/or dumping some salary.

Ugh. TSN just resurrected the Tanguay for Ryder ( a draft pick) rumor. Yes, let's trade a good player under contract for a struggling UFA. To join the other 9 UFAs we already have. If Sutter isn't already on the hot seat, he would be after a move like that. We don't need any more players we may not be able to keep. Trade Juice or Conroy or even Langkow if you have too...
