Sharks Trim Down Roster

Posted 12:08 AM ET | Comments 0
The Sharks final cuts are in. Here are the players that have been assigned to Worcester in the AHL.

Taylor Doherty
Bracken Kearns
John McCarthy
Harri Sateri
Matt Tennyson

And the one player who was assigned to San Francisco in the ECHL.

Matt Pelech

Sharks.nhl.com also said that Anthony Stewart has been released and won't be offered a contract.

Doing the math, that's 24 players, which is one over the limit of 23 for an opening day roster. You guessed it, LTIR.

David Pollak from the San Jose Mercury laid it all out on a platter earlier today on the Mercury's website. He reported that Raffi Torres and Martin Havlat will start the season on injured reserve, however only Torres will be on the LTIR.

From Pollak's piece, here is the Sharks roster for the start of 2013/14:

FORWARDS (13) – Brent Burns, Adam Burish, Logan Couture, Andrew Desjardins, Freddie Hamilton, Tomas Hertl, Tyler Kennedy, Patrick Marleau, Matt Nieto, Joe Pavelski, James Sheppard, Joe Thornton, Tommy Wingels.

DEFENSEMEN (7) – Dan Boyle, Justin Braun, Jason Demers, Scott Hannan, Matt Irwin, Brad Stuart, Marc-Edouard Vlasic.

GOALIES (2)– Antti Niemi, Alex Stalock.

INJURED RESERVE – Raffi Torres, Marty Havlat.

Torres' contract is more than enough to allow the Sharks to be compliant to the cap, as it covers what they were over the limit. Now I'm not quite sure what the cap looked like after the assignment's to the AHL and when Torres' was placed on LTIR, but I will be looking into this more tomorrow. Capgeek is a hot mess right now with all the transactions today.

The thoughts that are floating around out there right now are that Martin Havlat will, eventually, go on the LTIR. Why it hasn't happened at this moment, I'm not sure. The Sharks need him to be safe and sound so they can buy out his contract after this season and the LTIR is as safe and cozy as it gets for an injury bug like Havlat.

Notes:

- It looks as though Tomas Hertl may see action on the top line with Thornton and Burns to start the season.

- The second unit seems to be shaping up as Wingels, Couture and Marleau.

- Pollak had this to say in reference to the departed 3rd assistant captain Ryan Clowe

#SJSharks not naming a 3rd assistant captain to replace the departed Clowe

P.S. I've created an ESPN fantasy league in hopes of finding 9 other people willing to join. Here's the link:

Draft is set for Sunday the 6th at 10ET. Hope to see you there.

That's all for now, thanks for reading. Stay icy, Sharks fans.
