Omark to Tampa Bay??

Posted 2:28 AM ET | Comments 6
Since nobody has posted any Tampa Bay Lightning content in a long time I figured I would take a crack at covering the team and the current rumors around them.

Starting with Eklund's rumor yesterday tying the Lightning to the recently demoted Linus Omark.

Omark has incredible offensive upside tallying 27 pts in 57 career NHL games (yet he is a minus 18), but many forget that last season was Omark’s first year playing in North America. One must believe that Omark has the capability to at least be a playable NHL player on both ends of the ice, and even if he isn’t why can’t he just be paired with a strong defensive player to offset his poor defense.

Enter Domonic Moore. Yes he is a career minus 16, but that has more to do with his role as a third line checking center then it does with his defensive abilities. Moore is a solid two-way player who has shown offensive flashes throughout his career, while also consistently displaying his ability to play against top offensive players.

How would a line of Downie-Moore-Omark look for TBay behind their already strong top six??? Right now Ryan Shannon is on the third line with Downie and Omark, and shifting him down to the fourth line with Jones, Hall and Thompson gives the Lighting a bottom four that is solid and competitive against all other fourth lines in the league. (Yes four players would compete for three positions on the bottom line with one player being a healthy scratch)

I have to believe that if Edmonton's price is reasonable that Stevie Y would have already looked at bringing Omark to Tampa.

So what is Edmonton's price?? According to Eklund it is a big time defensive prospect...so who could Tampa Bay afford to lose from the backend??

Last game Tampa Bay went with:
- Hedman; Brewer
- Bergeron; Gilroy
- Clark; Kubina

With Bruno Gervais as a healthy scratch...my question is considering the potential upside of a young defenseman like Matt Gilroy why could the Lightning not offer up a Gilroy for Omark type deal??

In two games this season Gervais has 2 pts (1G, 1A) while Gilroy has 3 pts in ten games (0G, 3A). I think we can all agree taking Gilroy out of the line-up and replacing him with Gervais would not be a major drop off, and may in fact even be an improvement for the Lightning.

Gilroy doesn't have great value but he does have some offensive upside, and will not hurt the Oilers in their own end. Gilroy is a Hobey Baker winner, and did play at Boston College so the pedigree to be a strong NHLer is there, he simply hasn't had a great opportunity to play a key offensive role on any team. An opportunity I think he could get in Edmonton.

The contracts are fairly similar with Gilroy making 1M and Omark making $875,000. With Gilroy set for UFA status this summer and Omark set for RFA the Lightning may possibly have to throw in a mid-round draft pick.

So the question I present to you, readers is twofold....
1) Would you like to see Omark in a TBay jersey
2) Do you think Steve Tambellini would accept an offer of
a. Omark for Gilroy
Or
b. Omark for Gilroy plus a mid-round pick

Let me know your thoughts!

I wouldn't call 27 points in 57 games incredible lol

I think Omark for gilroy and a late pick is reasonable, but it's not going to happen. The oilers are full of bottom pairing defenseman. The oilers need a top two guy.By the way, omark's -18 was on the worst team in the league last year. The oilers didn't have many players

27 pts in 57 games is not incredible, but his offensive upside is. Keep in mind last year was his first in North America and at age 24 he still has time to develop into the offensive player that can play top six minutes for an NHL team

Would be a decent depth move for the Oilers defence, although I'm not too familiar with Matt Gilroy as i haven't seen much of his play. Looking at his stats he seems to be a shutdown sort. Oilers have some pretty good D prospects in the minors and junior at the moment. If they were to make a trade for a D man it would have to be someone who could step in right now, otherwise it would be a waste. That being said Omark in the minors is a waste IMO.
