Nonis sticks to his guns

Hey Guys,

The trade deadline is finally over, and I'm sure players all across the NHL are relieved. There have been numerous trade talks regarding the leafs and their core players for several weeks now. One trade that I was hoping to see today was captain Dion Phaneuf headed to the Detroit Red Wings, Unfortunately things fell through. The Red Wings decided to take the safe route and trade their 3rd round pick to the New Jersey Devils for UFA Marek Zidlicky. Not going to lie, When Trade centre announced the deal I was a little disappointed. After days of playing phone tag I thought Nonis would get it done.

Reports indicated Toronto GM Dave Nonis and Detroit GM Ken Holland were on the verge of swapping captain Dion Phaneuf, Peter Holland, and a conditional draft pick for Riley Sheahan, Jakub Kindl, 1st round pick, and a 3rd round pick. Toronto would also retain $1.5 mil of Dions salary. This would have easily been the trade of the day. A close source told me GM Ken Holland wanted at least 2mil retained and had no interest in trading away his 2015 1st round pick. I must admit that is a little excessive for a player who makes $7mil and is nothing more than a top 4 defenseman. Phaneuf may have the ability to make big hits, fire clappers from the blueline, and carry top minutes, but end of the day he's nothing special.

The Leafs organization tried to get the best possible return for captain pilon and decided to stick to their guns, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Now with the dust settled and players minds at ease teams in the playoff hunt can focus on their remaining games. And as for me, I'll be counting down the days until the draft to see what Shanahan and company has in mind.

Well that's all for now,

Thanks for taking the time out your day to read my blog, your comments, and thoughts are much appreciated.
