Bill Meltzer had an interesting post today regarding the debate over whether or not the NHL should switch to shootouts in the playoffs:

I stand with Mr. Meltzer on this, and just want to add a thought I had. The people who are looking for a change in playoff format are clearly not hockey fans, or they would know how ridiculous this idea is. They should ask themselves a few questions:

- Should the NFL decide playoff ties with a field goal contest?
- Should MLB decide playoff ties with a home run derby?
- Should the NBA decide playoff ties with a free throw contest?

I think any sane person would answer "no" to each of those questions. What makes them think it's a good idea to do something similar in the NHL?
