Gretzky age 23-26.

Howe age 22-24, 27, 40

Jagr age 23, 26, 28, 33

Lemieux age 22, 23, 27, 29

Messier age 25, 26, 28

What are these ages? The ages in which these players had their highest point totals. I don't care what the accepted assumption is, forwards peak between 23-26 for points. Stamkos is 26. Not to say he can't have his best season next year, but do we really want to pay for past production? Plus, Stamkos may will win us too many games next year.

Let's be real, the Leafs are going to suck again next year. Just like the Sabres suck again this year. Yes, we may have Brown, Kapenen, Marner, Leipsic, Matthews, Nylander all playing on the Leafs next year. But, we may also only have Nylander up there.

Whether we like it or not, we are not making the playoffs next year. Let's not jump ahead and tie ourselves to a player for 7 years at 10-11 million per. He is not Toews. He doesn't have three cups. He is not going to carry the team on his back to a Cup next year.

Instead of signing Stamkos, I have another idea...yes these are assuming the other teams accept these offers.

1. Don't sign Stamkos.

2. Trade Reimer to MTL for 2nd rounder, re-sign July 1 for two years
3. Trade Ottawas 2nd rounder and MTL's 2nd rounder for Demko
4. Trade Kadri for Shattenkirk in June
5. Draft Chychrun
6. Buy out Lupul

Two years from now...

JVR Nylander Marner
Johnson Bozak Brown
Kapenen Komarov Timashov
Leipsic Gauthier Bracco

Shattenkirk Chychrun
Zaitsev Reilly
Neilsen Gardiner
Dermott

Demko
Bernier
This is a team with potential. What do you think?

being past his prime and sucking are 2 completely different things. stamkos is still a legitimate 40 goal scorer. shattenkirk is older than stamkos

Hey....thanks for the read.I think the decision on Stamkos is simple. Win the lottery and draft Matthews.....then signing him is a good idea. Lose the lottery and that means take a pass. People focus on his broken leg when talking about his decreased production, but I think a lot of it has to do with no longer having St. Louis setting him up all day (and vice-versa). If they land Matthews then it makes sense to me, otherwise, continue the slow rebuild.Side note.......no way Montreal makes that deal. I think Reimer is worth a #2 pick, and will re-sign with us, but the window for Montreal to make that move and try to hold on to a playoff spot has passed.Cheers!

thanks for the comments guys. as for the time has passed for the reimer deal, i agree. I actually posted this elsewhere a little earlier and was late posting here. But I do agree, if that was going to happen then it was going to happen 3 weeks ago.
