The Leafs left this weekends NHL Draft with a few extra pieces then when they arrived, an impressive move by Fergusen picking up Toskala to shore up the Leafs goaltending and adding gritty winger Bell from the Sharks and still drafting Oshawa Generals winger Dale Mitchell a 40+ goal scorer this past season in the third round equals a great weekend in Leafland. The situation now is this the Leafs have 8 capable defensemen that can play everyday in the NHL and if you include Swedish defensemen Stralman to the crew of McCabe, Kablerle, Kubina, Gill, White, Colaiacovo, Kronvall and Wozniewski that would make nine. The Leafs are still looking for a scoring winger and are close to the potential new cap of about $48 million, if you take into consideration that they are looking to offer Toskala a new contract that could see them pay the Finnish goaltender an average of 3 million a season. This would only leave the Leafs with around $4 to $5 million to play with and a Ryan Smyth signing would cost the Leafs at least $6 million a season, rumours swirl that the Leafs are looking to unload either McCabe or Kubina this off season but as of yet have not had anyone bite, Stajan & Kilger could also be had for a price. The Leafs plan B could be the signing of Jason Blake who could be had for much cheaper price than Smyth but is also 34 years old and would cost the team at least $4 million a season. Another rumour going around is that the Leafs are interested in re-signing Peca so no matter if they go after Blake they will still need to make some room available under their cap and dealing from a position of strength is the viable solution to this current dilemma but the question remains which defensemen will it be Kubina? or McCabe? the latter will have to also waive his no trade clause. The Leafs will need to take some action and hopefully before the July 1st shopping season, we need scoring and have to do what it takes to get it even if it means going over the CAP temporarily and figuring out what to do after, so it is writing and hopefully it will be done.

I think the team was overall doing fairly well in the scoring dept last season. I would personally like to see a few less goals against to be honest. lets hope that Toskala both cut down on the team GAA and push raycroft to be a bit better.

1) Toskala is under contract for 07/08 at $1.5(ish) million. Not a projected $3 million he could get next season.2) There is no rumors at all of McCabe OR Kubina being on the trade block. It's all have and want from Leafs fans, like your self. The POSSIBILITY of one of them getting moved, is evident, but both have NTC so the outcome in my opinion is highly unlikely. Can you imagine the image it would bring upon the Leafs if they asked either Bryan or Pavel to waive their NTC just because the team wants more money? What a slap in the face. JFJ isn't a stupid man.

1) Fergusen is looking to lock up Toskala long term but cant until after July 1st according to NHL rules and 2) Kubina does not have a no trade clause so can be dealt anytime and McCabe is rumoured to have been shopped all weekend so dont hate the player hate the game.

Actually, I'm pretty sure Kubina does have a no trade clause.

Ferguson would be pretty stupid to sign Toskala to a long term deal, right out of the gate. Toskala hasn't had to deal with Maple Leaf pressure and who knows if he'll preform like he did in San Jose.
