The Bowman Factor

Posted 10:59 AM ET | Comments 7
So our beloved Maple Leafs are interested in Scotty Bowman as president of the hockey side, again. Are the rumours true or is this just another summertime Leaf rumour? The fact is that the Maple Leafs make a ton of money every season whether they make the playoffs or not, it does make sense that they would use some of these funds to bring in a great hockey mind to put the pieces in place for a cup run.
Bowman is the greatest coach the game has ever had but how would he be in a managerial role is another question all together. His stunt as GM with the Sabres did not produce much for the team but this scenerio with the Buds would be different as he would have a GM in place and a coach. I for one do not agree that Bowman should come in and blow this team apart with the season just around the corner and i do feel that the team should go into the season with some minor tweaks on top of what they have done so far. Bowman should keep Fergusen and Maurice on board with a short leash before revamping the make of the team, Bowman would need sometime to go through the organization and see exactly what the team would require on the ice and in the offices when it comes to hockey. Bowman would want full control of the hockey side and he should get that but blowing this team apart would not happen as it does not make any sense with the season 7 weeks away, if you dont even know what you have, so i cant see that happening, not at first anyhow. The Leafs want to win and that goes from the ownership all they way down to the fan base, is this the move that would get us over the hump? Who knows? This may just be another summertime Leafs rumour so until something is sealed, signed and delivered we will take all this talk with a grain of salt.

Actually, TSN.com has a report on it and Bowman says he is happy where he is for right now.

Even if Bowman gets control, there's no guarantee he'd make the Leafs great. The only place he was running the whole show was Buffalo-and he didn't win there.

Bowman was not the president of the Sabres he was the GM and on 3 occasions the coach during his tenour, and the Sabres only missed the playoffs on 1 occasion, in Toronto he wouldnt be expected to work 15 hours a day he would just get the people in place who would do that. Different role different time.

He would be awesome for the Leafs. Finally someone with pedigree to lead them into contenders. Never gonna happen.

I think this is all mostly the media running with a great rumour...Bowman denies everything but the rumour just keeps coming back..I think the Leafs would be better off with a new owner...Just one man...not the Ontario teachers pension fund the majority on a group of investors looking for the dollar.which they have been too successful in making at the expense of the team and the fans who support them..Let Jim Balsillie buy the whole team and maybe then the team can focus on a championship...instead of making money for shareholders...I hate that word..shareholders...Balsillie is a billionaire who is rich enough to not need record profits from the team as the Backberry has already made him rich..instead of a bunch of greedy underworked teachers..

At this stage of his career, running a team is the only thing he has left to prove. His days of coaching are definitely over, but I'd love to see Bowman in Toronto. It all depends on whether he wants to work that much anymore.
