Same Old Song and Dance

Throughout the years there have been many things required to become a hockey player - stick, puck, ice, and the ability to speak in cliches. This is a skill that is taught at a very young age. Only with years of training and practice can a person truly master this art. This was clear today in a transcript of Thursday's media conference with Flyers GM Paul Holmgren. There were 17 questions asked of Mr. Holmgren and he supplied 55 cliches and catch phrases. Some were repeated, some are Flyer specific (especially after last season), and some are NHL classics. Whichever they are, they can be enjoyed by all. This is not meant to be demeaning, but simply intended to bring a smile to your face. Please view and laugh accordingly, here they are in order.

...I like to believe we are a better team...A lot of things have to go our way...We have to be injury-free...Our goaltending has to be good...We have 82 games...have to take them one game at a time...You just got to take each game as they come...hope you can stay healthy...hope you can click on all cylinders...it was a very difficult year last year...It didn't translate into wins a lot of nights...we were a very competitive team...I sense a real excitement here...who were here last year have a bad taste in their mouth...want to turn things around...He's a tremendously gifted player...really a hard-working kid...gave us a boost of enthusiasm and energy...I look for big things...been one of my favorite players to watch...he's a heart and soul player...That's a good question...do a better job in our own zone...cut down on the goals-against...didn't perform probably up to his standards...counted on them more last year than maybe we should have...perform up to their standards or ours...I look for a big year from him...That's a good question...get better at is our goals-against...do a better job in our own end...tremendous competitor...gave us a chance to win a lot of games...That's a good question...fell behind the eight ball...area of concern with our team...put it on the radar screen...so we can get down to the other end of the ice...our work ethic as team...we just didn't work hard...didn't compete hard enough to win the hockey game...better team on paper...be prepared to work hard every night...be prepared right from the start...be ready to play every night...be behind the eight ball...you have to draft well...you've got to develop well...That's a good question...in a very difficult division...in a tough conference...got to be ready right from the get-go...play our best hockey...players are a year older...We have a difficult task at hand...We have a difficult task at hand...need to be ready right from the start...

Appreciate the grin. (Maybe there is a book out there titled "Coaches' Guide to Press Conference Cliches, Catch Phrases, Buzzwords, Diversionary Utterances")

It cant be easy expalining going from 13 straight PO showings to the worst season in 40 years (your history) and doing it over and over agian. You have to feel bad for the guy, and happy with his agressive response to the situation.
