Downie? Hollweg? BS.

Posted 7:11 PM ET | Comments 33
Can someone please explain to me why we have heard nothing about Hollweg killing Horcoff into the boards the same night Downie punched Blake in the eye? Why have we hear absolutely nothing about the league "investigating" him like they were Downie? Is it because Hollweg doesn't have a record of this stuff? We all know that can't be it. He has a long wrap sheet then Downie. Is it because players like Tucker have built that reputation and it is expected? Someone please explain it to me... because I really don't understand it at all.

just thought I would throw this in from the Flyers website...

While the Downie incident was the focus of the Toronto media following the game, there was an equally if not more dangerous play earlier in the game when Braydon Coburn was checked from behind into the boards by the Maple Leafs’ Pavel Kubina. Coburn’s face was bloodied on the play but he stayed in the game. Kubina was not penalized.

That incident did not receive nearly as much attention, to the surprise of the big defenseman.

“I was a little curious about that. Sometimes that’s the way things go,” said Coburn. “This year we’ve had a few incidents, but in terms of my hit, it didn’t feel too good. I thought it at least warranted a penalty.”

He went on to explain the play from his perspective.

“I had the puck and was going to make a play on the puck. I didn’t even know who hit me until [Derian] Hatcher told me this morning. I didn’t see [Kubina] coming or anything like that. It was pretty much a hit from behind from my point of view.”

Downie is a piece of crap. Understand that?

thanks for that contribution. point proven. anyone else?

maybe nothing is being said about hollweg becuase he knows how it feels to be the one getting hurt and maybe he didnt mean to hurt anyone .
January 7, 2008 7:46 PM ET | Delete
That has to be the stupidest comment I have ever seen. He knows what its like to get hurt? So then why did he throw Horcoff face first into the boards? What a stupid comment.

Hollweg is worse garbage than Downie. Downie is a bigger name and he's a Flyer, so it makes for bigger news.
January 7, 2008 7:50 PM ET | Delete
My point is, why hasn't he been suspended? Why hasn't the league made it known they are investigating his hit like they did the Downie hit?
January 7, 2008 8:16 PM ET | Delete
Hollweg's a ranger... Campbell was a Ranger.... keep things nice and cozy between the big boys. Flyers are, were and always will be viewed as the outcasts. The big, bad team that you're hated for loving. When a Ranger does something stupid, well, nobody seems to really care... when a FLyer does something stupid, It's news and it's Orange and Black bashing time again.
January 7, 2008 8:29 PM ET | Delete
I could care less about the bashing, it makes me laugh. But the fact that there was no suspension to Hollweg... thats pathetic.
January 7, 2008 8:37 PM ET | Delete
Some of you Flyer fans just don't get it! It's because of FIVE suspensions at the very beginning of the season that the eyes are on your team -- and rightfully so. And you are delusional if you think that Downie will not be watched more than anyone else. No one is "worse garbage" than Downie. And your team is NOT treated worse than other teams. Ohlund got a 4 game suspension (deserved) for his whack. Jones' hit on Bergeron was far worse -- he deserved 20 games and what did he get? So it falls flat, this persecution complex some Flyers fans (too many) have. Get over it.

again, i hate to continue to disagree with you, because i love your passion for hockey, but i really believe if the shoe was on the other foot and Tucker sucker punched Kapanen while he was tied up by the linesmen and blacked his eye, you'd be screaming for a suspension for Tucker...maybe im wrong. personally, i think it was a cheap shot, but not suspendable - and the league deemed that it wasnt.
January 7, 2008 8:52 PM ET | Delete
The worst incident in that game was Kubina on Coburn... and not a word about it from anyone.
January 7, 2008 8:53 PM ET | Delete
Jones got exactly what he deserved. See Brooks Orpik-Erik Cole incident. My biggest problem with your example, ninja, is that while both Downie and Tucker are known for their cheapshots, Kapanen is not. I didn't see the incident, nor am I arguing about whether or not a suspension is merited, I DID however, see the Hollweg incident, and it's an utter joke that nothing has come up on the matter.
January 7, 2008 8:54 PM ET | Delete
I never once said Downie did anything right or anything along those lines. I didn't even critique the Downie incident. My point was why the hell was Hollweg swept under the rug? Explain that to me..
January 7, 2008 8:56 PM ET | Delete
Elchrisco... what did Kapanen have to do with anything?

I totally agree with rdfred - Downie sohuld join Simon and leave this league. He's constantly there to hurt someone. I am NOT defending Hollweg at all, and if he was suspended, then I wouldn't aruge with that. However, if you watch Hollweg play, 95% of the time, he is out there to make a big hit, and NOT injure anyone. Accidents happen, and when they do, I do not defend him. He deserved a suspension for his last hit. However, Downie is just a moron, and if he continues to play in this league, mark my words he will be the next Simon!
January 7, 2008 9:15 PM ET | Delete
NYRFAN9 did you watch the Flyers game? No. Downie was out there doing alot more then just trying to hurt someone. And has done alot more then that throughout his hockey life. He has more potential then any of the people you just mentioned as an offensive talent. He loses his cool and that needs to be corrected. But he isn't just out there to hurt people, if you have ever seen him play, he does alot more then that.
January 7, 2008 9:23 PM ET | Delete
It doesn't matter who has talent or who does not. Downie sucker punched Blake.
January 7, 2008 9:25 PM ET | Delete
I actually have seen him play, all of those 5 games when he is NOT suspended!"He isn't JUST out there to hurt people" - does that mean that he IS out there to hurt people, and more.....:) Listen, I am not arguing with you. The fact is that this is a contact sport, and some people are more likely to lose cool than others. But this league gets hurt everytime someone does, be it Downie, Hollweg, Simon, whoever. I'm not here to argue with you as Flyer fan because I'm a Ranger fan. All I'm saying is that if Downie has potential and wants to show it in the NHL, he better learn NOW. Because if he throws another dirty hit, he should not be allowed to play - for better of this game, and safety of other palyers. Good luck to you.
January 7, 2008 9:26 PM ET | Delete
ok well that has nothing to do with what the intentions of this post were. The reason for this post was WHY THE HELL HAS THERE BEEN NO ACTION TO HOLLWEG AND THERE WAS TO DOWNIE?
January 7, 2008 9:29 PM ET | Delete
I don't know. I agree with you that Hollweg deserved a suspension for his hit. Unfortunately not every dirty play in the NHL results in suspension - it should, but it doesn't. And if you think that this is because Campbell used to be a Rangers coach, than you are just out of your mind.
January 7, 2008 10:00 PM ET | Delete
I never said anything about it having anyting to do with Hollweg being a Ranger. My point is.. there is absolutely no consistency in the NHL. None.
January 7, 2008 10:17 PM ET | Delete
Look, this is not the first time Downie hit dirty, and this is why he gets more attention....can you really blame the league for it.?
January 7, 2008 10:22 PM ET | Delete
P.S. downie was NOT even suspended.
January 7, 2008 10:52 PM ET | Delete
I know he didn't get suspended. But he was talked to and it was made into a big deal. This also is not the first time Hollweg was suspended, he got a 3 game suspension last year for sending Rj face first into the boards. You aren't understanding my point here. My point is that why has there been absolutely nothing regarding the Hollweg or even the Kubina hit when they happened the same night as the Downie hit. It is pretty obvious there is a ton of inconsistency in the league's punishments to players. Yes Downie wasn't suspended but he was talked to by the league and nothing has been done for Hullweg or Kubina, which were both more dangerous plays. I am not defending Downie.
January 7, 2008 11:55 PM ET | Delete
No clue why Hollweg wasn't suspended..I personally think he should have gotten a suspension(1-3 games)...At this point though, the big focus is on Downie as he as already established himself as a player as someone to keep watch on..His antics prior to becoming a Flyer, his lenghty suspension, and what he did in the AHL game during that fight..I wouldn't be suprised if he pulls a Simon in the near future, he lacks any semblance of self control

I want to see Downie break Avery's face on Thursday!
January 8, 2008 10:15 AM ET | Delete
I admit the Downie thing was a big cheap shot, but not supsendable. I know the Flyers are up to like 6 league reviews this season now, but my biggest problem with this is why is this headline news EVERYWHERE? Isn't there more to report on from the NHL than some young green kid's stupid move?
January 8, 2008 11:32 AM ET | Delete
Look, like it or not, Toronto is the center of the hockey universe. Everything is blown out of proportion. Downie's action made for good air time, both on the the TV and written. That creates preasure on the league to "investigate" to at least curtail the media buzz the punch created. That punch however, damaged Downie's reputation with his peers far more than Blake's face. Blake's face will heal, Downie's reputation....Actually, now that were talking about Blake, does anyone else think that he looks like a Gremlin? Maybe Yoda? Definitely a Hobbit!

NYRFAN9, To answer your question regarding Avery. When the Rangers acquired him I said that I was happy that Avery was a Ranger because I had a New Favorite Ranger to HATE! At the time I didn't realize exactly what he was all about. Yea I heard some stuff about him but didnt have the opportunity to watch him in action. Now that I have seem him in action I would not want this guy on my team. He's a punk. And yes when someone tries to retaliate Avery gets surrounded by Linesmen. Hollweg at least stands up for himself so I have to give him credit for that. Simon is trash, he's been dead wood for the Isle's since we signed him. Don't throw that at me, just because I'm an Isles fan doesnt mean I support Simon. I dont. When Avery files for FA next year and signs with another team, let me know how you feel about him then. For now hes overrated.

Avery is another Darcy Tucker in my book. I don't like them now

I quit. everytime I post I get cut off.
January 8, 2008 10:35 PM ET | Delete
How do we know that Campbell didn't talk with Hollweg and Kubins? Its all in the media, and Downie gets ratings, I for one am going to watch the Philly ottawa game on the 20th, should be interesting
January 9, 2008 7:17 AM ET | Delete
Awe jeez...another Flyers fan cooking up another excuse for the garbage they have on thier team...I have heard it from every angle north east west and south..I am really getting tired of it...Go ahead and bring out the violins and sing that song again..I am slowly coming around to the fact I dislike Philly fans more than Montreal fans...at least Montreal has some class...Your goons are gonna be out of the league by next year and hopefully your club will get some big fines to think about..and hopefully one or two of your star players will be on the diabled list..enough of this whining and crying...Kubina..Tucker...blah blah...Somebody unplug that broken record please!....
