After Jason Smith got traded there was one big question. Who will be the Oilers Captain? That is a question that probably won't be awnsered until training camp starts in September. With Jason Smith playing in Philadelphia now the Oilers don't have captain, now the obvious choice for captain WOULD HAVE been Ryan Smyth but he is no longer in Edmonton either so I thought I would show some possibilities?

Here are my candidates for the Oilers captaincy.

1. Steve Staios- This is a guy that has a lot of leadership and is ok offensivly and is a good defensive player.

2. Shawn Horcoff- He's a good young player, last year had 16 goals and 35 assists which wasn't his best season, in 05-06 he had a career high 73 points. I think he still is a longshot to get it though.

3. Ethan Moreau- He wore the A last year until he got injured, a good leader, a gritty player, only known to get about 25 points in a season, he has a career +19 rating.

4. Sheldon Souray- Even though he's new to the team he still could potentially get the C, he's from Elk Point, AB, good on the powerplay, gritty player, had a career high 64 points last year, but had a -28 rating.

5. Ales Hemsky- He's no Sidney Crosby but he is a really good young player probably a future All-Star, he's a good play maker, last year he had 13 goals and 40 assists in 64 games, everyone says he would be a much better player if he shot the puck more, had a career high 77 points in 05-06.

Well those are the people I think are worthy of wearing the C this year but here's how I think it will be at the start of the season.

Ethan Moreau-C
Sheldon Souray-A
Steve Staios-A

But it could change if they get new players before the start of the season.

Dude, good blog but I think you are missing one solid candidate. Jarett Stoll. I think Stolly has all the leadership qualities to be Captain, but age may be a road block for him. Here's my vote:Captain - StollAssistant - MoreauAssistant - StaiosAt the end of the day though I think you're probably right that one of Moreau or Staios will be Captain.

I think it may be Stoll as well. He is a guy who should be around for a long time. So while Moreau or Staios may be better next year or the year after, Stoll is the guy they are gonna want to wear it in 2 or 3 years tops. So they may just give it to him now.

IMO... Moreau will wear the 'C' this year and for years to come. Staios and Stolly will get the 'A's. Souray is a great home-town pick, but his ability to lead this team is unproven, whereas the previous three are solid in that area. Ales... would only be selected by the coaching staff as a way for him to improve his all-round game.

Horcoff is your best bet. Guys like Staios and Souray will be leaders anyways. Hemsky is an awesome player, but you're better off with the canadian kid.

I think that Moreau will get the "C", just because he is what a captain should be, hard worker, stand up for your team mates and leads on and off the ice, not every captain is the best player.

I'd go with Moreau as captain for many of the reasons Farlz29 mentioned above. Horcoff, Stoll, Staois and Souray should all be in the mix for A's but at this point Moreau is the clear leader of the team.

Being a Captain has nothing to do with points or plus/minus any season. A Captain is someone that can lead a team both off an on the ice. Jason Smith was a great Captain in my opinion, but he was hardly an offensive threat. Stoll or Moreau are the best choices.
