Flames thoughts:

Turris- There has been mixed opinion on this kid. He hasn’t put up star numbers but has a load of talent and potential. Turris Played the 11 season getting 5 more points than his previous NHL stint in 09 and improving from minus 15 to even plus/minus. He did improve, although marginally. His average ice time was not great so it makes sense his point totals would reflect that, this is a kid that has probably grown up used to prime time minutes and powerplay time.

Calgary has a gaping hole in it’s center positions. Morrison is very old for a hockey player, Moss has shown he no more the a second or third line winger, Stajan is softer than rich creamery butter in august. There just is not a lot of talent in the middle. Backlund has some chops but Backlund is one guy, getting another young center with potential cannot hurt a club that has been screaming for it for years.

The talk has been that Calgary does not want to pay to get him though as Turris holds out but I believe there may also be the issue of how many pro contracts Calgary would have, which would be the max at 50, they need Phoenix to take a contract back. Phoenix would look foolish trading a 2007 3rd overall draft pick for Hagman…. Or Stajan… it would have to be someone decent or a decent prospect.

Winning. The Flames are a middle of the road team, wins are not easy to come by. A team like the habs with no defence to speak of anymore and no Cammalleri should be ripe for the plucking. Price might have other ideas though and Goalies can win you games, they can also lose you games as Flames fans have found out this year. 10 Goals against. Listen 10 goals against a Crosby-less Penguins and the St.Louis Blues… Not exactly offensive dynamos… Tonight’s game has the appearance of an easy win, should they lose it could trigger early season panic.

***

There has been calls to blow up the team, the variations on what that means are many. The fact the team has 12 UFA’s next season handles that, there will be a great purge in the Flames organization. Should they not make the playoffs I for one think that purge will include the coach. In addition, as I’ve said before, if the Flames are out of it by Christmas I think most of thos UFAs and some of the contracts are totally open for discussion. July first next year could be a huge day for the Flames, there is hope that Parise is out there although unlikely. The Flames have over 20 million free to spend next year, if Kipper gets traded it could balloon up to 25 Million. The injection of some youth in Backlund, Beartschi, Nemisz, Brodie, Smith, Henry could have positive spin offs but could also include the standard rookie errors.

It should be a fun year though end to end, the possibilities of trades, pending UFA’s, Possible coaching change and even a fairly deep draft.

Coles notes on the above is that I would welcome Turris. Deal would have to be below 4mill per for at least two years. He still has proving to do. Irving and a third or fourth round pick to give up. Would add alot of youth.

Turris doesnt want 4 mill he wants 4 mill from Phoenix so they will trade him. I think he would sign a reasonable contract for 2-3 years and prove his worth. I dont love him but just the fact that he could instantly become one of if not our best young player I would trade for him.

Turris is intriguing to say the least...but what to give up? Coyotes won't be trading him cheap...I like Flames in 6 04's idea.

I would say give up any of our prospects except Backlund, bartcheti, horak and Reinhardt. And a late pick. Or move borky. Straight across. Seriously, he looks awful. He can score, but can't do anything else, at all.

I think we should roll the dice on this kid. 3rd round in 2013 Leiland or Nemicz would be better as we already gave away our 2nd

Turris might actually be a good fit in Calgary. I hope you guys don't get him.

Hockeycraze are you just friggin nuts!!! takeout Backlund

Kevin R are you nuts? do you think Phoenix will trade him for anything less than an up and coming prospect? He is a 22 year old 3rd overall pick. You aren't going to land him for Stajan or Hagman.

Thats fine, but Backlund wont be going over for Turris, maybe House or Nemitz

Turris' value has gone doen since he was drafted. I know he's still young but watching him last season I really can't say why he was drafted so high. His draft status isn't important he has the same value as any 22 year old with similar production.

Kevin R- Phoenix will keep him and make him play before they give him up for a 'C' level prospect like House or Nemisz. He has accomplished more than Backlund so would you trade Backlund for Travis Ewanyk 3rd? Doubt it.
October 14, 2011 12:30 PM ET | Delete
gretzky - Actually Backlund has a slightly higher points per game and hasnt been given as many soft minutes, Backlund is also hands down a much better overall 2 way player than Turris so to say has accomplished more than Backs....not so much as neither have really accomplished anything......

Just to weigh in. What if turris was drafted by the Flames instead of Phoenix? I have a feeling he may have been given the same opportunity Backlund has. I personally like Backlund more than Turrris but this team need young talent and turris is just that.
October 14, 2011 3:46 PM ET | Delete
I also feel that the Langkow trade has indicated to turris that he did not fit in their plans for top six minuites this year and he didn't want to waste his rfa year toiling in the minors again. Turris is not the first prospect to get the hell out of there, wheeler did too.
October 14, 2011 7:59 PM ET | Delete
Turris hasn't gotten the opportunity to play with Iginla or Tanguay so the points thing is slightly different. Phx needs a first rounder or former 1st rounder as compensation after Mueller and porter went away for... roszival.

Turris is an interesting player. I do not think he has been given enough of an opportunity in Phoenix. Also my take on the flames first winhttp://my.hockeybuzz.com/blog.php?user_id=56586
