Here is an excerpt from my latest blog:

...Calgary needs a great goalie to be a decent club, not sure if that is an indictment of the system being played but it is safe to say that if Kipper leaves a replacement will have to be found. Irving played decent up here and won against the Canucks which made him beloved by fans but his stats are not great after that Boston game. In addition to losing Kipper the Flames will not be better without Iginla, he’s a guy you can’t replace on many levels but you can start setting up future wins.

A team Like L.A. who has great goaltending but struggles with scoring would love to get Iginla, they have expressed interest in the past (as have many teams) but now the x-factor of Darryl Sutter being there might make them a front contender. Iginla won’t go just anywhere, he has a pretty sweet gig here but would it be hard to convince him L.A. might be pretty nice for a couple years for him and his family? Just a two hour flight from the family and place they call home? L.A. was considered a contender before the season, with Jarome filling in on wing with the possibility of playing with Kopitar or Richards they might be again. Schenn was the golden nugget L.A. had prior to trading for Richards but now that Quick is playing in Vezina type form Bernier would be available I believe. Of course cap would play into this and more pieces would swap but essentially the king’s pick and Bernier would be the starting point.

Acquiring Bernier would allow the Flames to trade Kiprusoff to the Caps. Kipper has a no movement clause in his contract but the reality is it expires this season and the choice is play with Ovechkin or go to Columbus. Washington would trade back Semin, Kuznetsov and their first or Colorado’s first. If that sounds like a lot for Kipper keep in mind Kuznetsov is not signed yet.

So essentially the Flames would end up with an NHL ready Bernier, two firsts on top of their own, Semin, Kuznetsov. As Semin is UFA and Kuztensov is unsigned so this has the potential to blow up in the Flames face yet with all that cap space going hard after a Zach Parise in the off season is much easier...

Haha you really think the caps would give up that much for Kipper lol.....your nuts isnt happening. Kuznetsov isnt going anywhere for one and GMGM isnt going to dump either of those 1st rounders he has.....good luck with that one

The Flames will never get that much for any two players. A re build takes time, and you won't get all the pieces for said rebuild in one or two trades.

Not sure I saw Kipper to Wash coming. I thought Iggy was more realistic. End of Jan will tell a tale. Those who will pay dearly will surface in Feb.

I can see Kipper to Tampa

Semin is a ufa next year and probably wouldnt sign... but kuznetsov and a first might make it worthwhile... semin is not a player we should trade for though as we have enough underacheivers who mail it in every othet game... unfortunately bernier doesnt get it done for iginla unless toffoli voinov and a first is included... And maybe

A brown or a johnson could be packagex with toffoli or voinov

Kipper to tampa for connoly?...

Read my mind on the Kipper deal BJ. If we got Semin to balance the cap in a Iggy deay with draft picks, we can maybe flip semin out for whatever we can get.

Good luck getting Kuznetsov after the world juniors he just had. Sure he's unsigned but Washington is a team capable of signing Russians.

I wouldn't trade my brother's jock strap for Semin. Guy has a wicked skill set but is so lazy and plays such an incomplete game that I wouldn't want to get anywhere near him. Plus he'll opt for big bucks in Russia next year and cruise over there on rep alone.

would kipper go to a non contender? I could see joking or bourque getting some value at trade deadline on teams looking to getting some more scoring for the playoffs. Wonder if wpg would be big buyers if they get in this year

Semin (1st rounder) Knuteszov (1st rounder) 1st pick for Kipper? Kipper? 33rd place in GAA 31st place in save %?Could be the stupidest most redickulous blog in the history of HB please stick to trading hockey cards moron

AMO, I will with Darren Dreger who has stated that teams around the league would pay a first, a top prospect and a top six for him. I can tell you didn't read the whole blog at the link though, would explain why you're so very misinformed (again).

numbear- Kipper might go to a non contender as he won't have a choice in the summer. I'd say playing for the caps, who are a good goalie away from being great, would be a better choice than say columbus.

Scuba- Think of semin as filler for Iggy. Lots of talk of semin going to russia next year, I think the Flames woul like the cap to pursue a parise.
January 10, 2012 10:34 AM ET | Delete
oilersfan- Kuznetsov is their best prospect so yes they might say in this situation it's too high of a price. A legit goalie like kipper who can steal games and help them to a cup might be worth that price no?

bj and kevin- Yeah I thought of TB as well, another good fit for sure.

Hey Sane, I also don't see Washington as a good fit. They already got their guy this summer, and it didn't cost them a single thing. Why would they sell the farm for Kipper, when it's not even clear that he's an upgrade over Vokoun? Tampa actually makes a bit of sense, and a guy like Connolly's much more likely to move than a guy like Kuznetsov.

hey pot you are black (dumbass)-kettle:) :) :) :)

jtommy, the vokun experiment has not turned out well. He's been better of late but I believe there's doubts there. TB is an excellent destination as well though, I totally agree there.

Also connoly is a good prospect but is he THE guy you want for Iginla? Just a question.
January 10, 2012 3:02 PM ET | Delete
just putting this out there, pronger is out, probably for the season, philly has briere for 4 more years, Giroux, Schenn and couterier. If they can work Iggy in there for Schenn or Couterier I would be much more happy with that return.

Connoly for Kipper

what if buffalo or wpg make the playoffs. I almost think jokinen/sarich and bourque would add exactly what those teams would need to compete. Getting something useable. By doing that, and trading kipper (sadly yes), I think iggy could stay in town and mentor the new regime. (maybe luke adam or ennis or kassian in some kind of combo for jokinen/bourque). A 2nd liner that could play 1st minutes on playoff teams, must have value.
January 11, 2012 11:34 AM ET | Delete
numbear- for sure. although I have said Iggy should go for the good of the future, he's still a huge piece who I'd also love to see here forever until retirement. Likelyhood he gets traded in his final year might be high though.
January 11, 2012 11:38 AM ET | Delete
Kuznetsov will be on an ELC anyways. his being unsigned is irrelevant. no way these teams do those trades. sorry.
January 12, 2012 5:06 PM ET | Delete
kuznetsov won't be on ELC unless he signs. His rights are only washingtons until a certain point where if he goes unsigned he re-enters the draft. Semin may walk away from the NHL this summer so regardless of upside in both players it isn't unrealistic as Calgary would assume all that risk.
