Flames summer fun pt 2

Posted 7:14 PM ET | Comments 10
The fun for Flames fans is this offseason that is coming up.

Who would make sense for the Flames to pursue? To trade for? To offer sheet? They have Cap, they have some trade bait in Beartschi, Hudler, their 4th overall pick, David Jones and Smid.

Nazim Kadri- Remember when Brian Burke shot down Brian Murray live on TSN in front of the nation at the draft when Murray want to trade for Toronto’s pick? The handling of Kadri was suspect sure, but Burke knows what he is capable of. He is a damn good hockey player and the Flames could use a bit of that. Is a 20 goal 50 pnt player worth a first? Remember when Burke traded for Kessel? Just chew on it.

Jake Gardiner- I bring up the Leafs first because G.M.’s like going to their well, Nonis knows Burke well and their relationship could lead to some pretty fair trades, meaning both teams and their fan bases would hate it. The fact is that Gardiner would really round out a blossoming Defence corps in Calgary along with Brodie, Giordano, Wideman and Smid. I don’t think they will try for Phaneuf, my belief is that Burke realized that was a mistake.

Vanek- Burke has said a top flight winger is needed and, although he can disappear some nights, Vanek is a very good player. Vanek has shown in the past he is more financially motivated than anything else, the Flames have cap room galore and the ability to bonus as well.

Tuomo Ruutu- New Jersey probably doesn’t love spending money and he plays the way Burke likes. He is not the best player in terms of points and has a pretty hefty cap hit so maybe N.J. would throw in a prospect or pick.

Jarome Iginla- “One year over and over again, we’ll send you were you want at the deadline every year until you retire and we can pay you”. Pretty good offer really.

Dwight King- I could see an offer sheet for this guy. 6’4 232 Lbs…what did Burke say about skilled size again?

Evander Kane- What player would land Evander Kane? The only comparable might be Monahan and that won’t happen. Would the Flames stomach moving their first for him? Maybe…just not this year.

James Neal- Not the biggest but he can score.

Jussi Jokinen- Hilarious to me that this guy was on waivers and the Flames passed up on the opportunity. Now he will collect serious return this offseason, teams with Cap should be first in line.

Joe Pavelski- Until his new contract starts up on July 1 he can be traded. How many 40 goal scorers are available? Not a ton. It will be a huge price to pay but is he a Burke kind of guy, at sub 6 foot and 30 years old?

Who would you like to see?

(Read Spezza wouldn’t like another Canadian team or he’d be on the list too)

Because the comments section is always f'd on this site here you go rob:

Rob- Prepare for butthurt. Burke does not care about offer sheets, he cares about blind siding G.M.'s with them as a first option. James Neal is just above average size, so what I said was entirely accurate. Vanek- .87 ppg and always gets 25-35 goals. San Jose will have cap issues and pavelski can be moved until the july 1 so they will take offers for sure, 4th overall pick is pretty good chip. To your last comment, with your Burke PHD, do you think he is a calm patient type? The reality is they are 90% drafting in the top 4, 9% in the top 10. sooth your tits bro...and do some research.

Penner may also be on the list if he is cheap.

Would love Pavelski but no way he is traded. I know Kane has red flags but winnipeg has to do something. Like Ruuttu and King proposals. Both would be good depth additions without giving up a lot. For tbe right price Gardiner or Kadri. i think Oreilly tops the Flames list though. You pretty much covered the bases here. If we do trade our first it has to be for a young guy like ROR.

What about Kulemin as a FA acquisition. Probably could be had for a steal. Signing a Grabovski could make sense if it is super short term. Then Stajan plays fourth line and PK. Monahan moves to the third line to play with Gaudreau. Helps provide some shelter for another year and Granlund and Knight get another year of seasoning in the A and are frequent call ups.

Signing impact FAs at this time makes little sense for the team. IMO of course. We will know a lot more about the potential impact of the young players in the system at the end of next season. Then hopefully the right moves can be made to start filling the remaining holes.

Go after Coyle or Chaisson to add a good young RW with size to our young group. Either would look good alongside Baertschi/Gaudreau and Monahan.

How do you get Coyle or Chiasson... you would have to give up Baertshi and more

Flames offer ROR an offer sheet with an AAV of $5 mill at 7 years that way our compensation to Colorado is only a 1st and 3rd. If the Avs match, the Flames switch their pursuit to Stastny in FA. May I be so bold as to suggest Callahan as a free agent possibility? Flames organization likes hard nosed, shot blocking, physical, system buying into guys and Callahan is exactly that.

You obviously did not do research before you wrote this. Offer sheets? Brian Burke has stated numerous times his dislike for offer sheets and how he does not believe in them. When you say " James Neal not the biggest" are you referring to his size? I would think being 6-2 208lbs you would be anything but small. Vanek? Really? Why? What makes you think San Jose has any interest in moving Joe Pavelski? Calgary has some good young pieces they just need to stay the course and draft well again this year at 4.
