It came as no surprise, Daryl Sutter trading down to the 23rd pick from 20 to pick up an additional 3rd round pick. This is interesting for a few reasons, Calgary already had two 3rd round picks and no 2nd round picks, they must have been comfortable that the guy they wanted would still be there three picks away so they traded. As soon as that trade went down, with guys like Carter Ashton and Jordan Schroeder available I immediately realized they were picking off the board a bit. In addition that extra 3rd round pick was kind of odd, would they flip them for a 2nd rounder? No. They would trade it and the rights for Jordan Leopold to Florida for the rights to Bouwmeester.

So before the 2nd round even started it's been interesting, I'll address Erixon first. I was a bit surprised they went with this kid but in retrospect he does fit, he is projected to be a top 4 D who is calm and makes good plays, not overly physical but has a high compete level. He is a project who is at least a few years away, he will have to put on about 20 lbs to make this team and he has to wait behind Negrin, Aulie and Pelech at the very least.

Jay Bouwmeester. I think the consensus is that the Flames will have to move some salary, somewhere between two to three million. Sutter would not trade for this guy unless he was confident he could sign him, the thought of Dion, Rocket Robin, Bouwmeester, Sarich, Giordano and Pelech is fun, I would like to see Vandermeer go but he's not the worst 6-7 guy ever! You want to play more defensively? Well here you go! Sadly this might be end of the ride for Pardy although I hope not because he is awesome!

The next few days should be interesting if Bouwmeester will agree in essence to a deal there could be another big deal very shortly.

P.S. This deal was also done with the New Jersey Devils...think Lou called in a favour to get the player he wanted?

I don't think Pardy makes enough to be sent packing. I like the looks of Regehr-Sarich, J-Bo-Dion, Gio-Pardy. Vandy is steady but is a bit pricey. Only one third rounder today - Ryan Howse.

Good point about the Devils. Didn't think of it until you mentioned it, but it is pretty obvious.

Pardy is aq free agent group 6 so if they sign him he may not cost much but he may be the odd guy out as pelech can be sent to the minors.

I guess we now know. Vandy is out and so are his $2.3MM. Wow, Sutter.

he's awesome...now get pardy signed and we look great (if we sign J-bo) can't imagibne trading vandermeer if the deal hasn't been worked at least verbally with j-bo.

p.s. Gettying Prust back for Vandermeer is great! Prust bleeds red.

Oh that Sutter. I love how he always proves his critics wrong. There is a good chance Calgary will have 3 of the top 6 dmen for the Canadian Olympic team now! I just hope a deal is announced soon for J-Bo.

I doubt sutter can sign him. he wants to play for the nucks. so I think it was a bad deal for flames fans.

Not counting my J. Bo's before they're signed. But either way, dumping Vandermeer's contract and getting Prust back is just a great move. I think the Flames should have grabbed Schroeder when they had the chance though. Dang it!!

Say what you will if the deal goes south, but at least Sutter swings for the fences. Too many GM's in this league sit back on their "rebuilding" rears. If you want the cup, you got to have an aggressive management team willing to do whatever it takes to give the team the oportunity to be the best - not just remain competetive

I think Jay Bo is over rated just like the flames. SO, he should be a great fit for any western canadian franchise. Look at his stats from last year and then compare them to Brian McCabe's who is a bum. Then again who cares really there is only 1 team in Canada that is important.
