What is Dion Worth?

I know I know... one fight with the coach does not not a trade rumor justify. In case you weren't aware several media outlets have blogged (but not reported) on a shouting match Between Dion Phaneuf And Brent Sutter. Some blogs say it may or may not have been Sutter or may or may not have been Phanuef but with a -2 on the night and the shouting about being selfish apparently you could assume it was Dion. Also because dion was the player who came out of the coaches office.

Regardless it brings up something that has been nagging at me a little. We have a number 1 center who, quite frankly, just sucks here. We have a franchise defenseman that is horribly talented and horribly inconsistent. Between the two you have 11.75 million dollars of Salary, in addition to that you have guys like Bourque who need to be re-signed and a lack of depth at the left wing.

What would Dion bring in from a trade? Seriously, say what you will about him if a g.m. is willing to pay Mike Commodore 3.75 million then Dion is a great deal at 6.5. I do not know if there is a no trade with Dion, maybe you do! Package Dion and Jokinen and you have some serious trade possibilities. There is also Corey Sarich who is a large chunk of change that could easily be moved as well. With a guy like Aaron Johnsonn waiting to play #6 d in the press box and Kronwall in the AHL and Pelech ready and two more guys in the AHL who could play in the NHL it is time to get your dollars worth out of guys like Dion.

If Sutter is tired of his selfish play and the accounts from people close to the team all report on how grating Dion is to be around with his arrogant sense of humor you have to consider the possibility that maybe his time here is done. Maybe also this could be a huge boon to the organization, imagine the picks and players you could get for a player of his caliber.

P.S. INO Pardy should be moved out in favour of Johnson who just plays better D, reminds me of Warrener but he can skate.

Trade Dion to Ottawa for Volchenkov!!! But you would have to take on Kelly as well. Both teams get what they want. Ottawa gets a PMD and the Flames get the other best shutdown D in the league!!!But I would rather Sens Philipps so that the Sens can keep Volchy!!! Go Sens Go

Yes: because an oft injured shutdown guy who is a pending UFA and an overpaid checking line forward are worth one of the top offensive blueliners in the game.

Top 6 forward, high end prospect, a 1st, and maybe a 2nd. If we could get something like that, I'd probably take it. He has the talent...but let's face it...he's a jackass. [laughs] In reality, in a few years, we'd probably regret giving him up. A lot. But if this team keeps under-achieving, a major shake up like that might be needed.

Trade Jokinen instead... by himself. For what we're paying him he has no excuse. I was really excited for him when the trade happened but now I wish he would go away. I'd also imagine that a strong #1 centre with a heart would make up for anything that Phaneuf is lacking.

saneopinion, love reading your blogs, but i must say that this one didn't strike me as your better work :) We both know phaneuf isn't going anywhere.as for jokinen, i dont' even have the words to express my feelings towards his pace to have 8 goals total this season.

Olli--I think i wrote a blog not too long ago on why he should go! Thanks Flames12, I appreciate that and I used to agree you, but in light of Jay-bo being awesome, the depth we have, the recent fights Dion has been getting in and the Flames' needs in their line up I would not be overly surprised if he was moved. Maybe off season? I don't know. He can change games by himself but you wind cups with teams and it seems like he is becoming a guy who is not team first.

Theoretically, I'd say something along the lines of the Boyle trade (relatively decent roster defenseman and a bunch of draft picks) only not retarded. I'm very curious about Dion, this is about the fifth or sixth time in the past two years I've heard rumors about these type of problems with him. This is the first time I think it's officially been reported in the media though.

jeeze!!! dion is going no where!! we should all hope so as well. and from what i have herd the shouting match was between sutter and all 6 dmen that night and dion was the only one yelling back. dion is young. if i was 23-24 and made 6 mill a year i (and most guys out there) would be a little on the jackass side of things.

oh and the flames are 12-5-2 right?? yeah they're underachieving....

Dion always kinda gave off "McCabe vibes" to me... given, he's already a better player than McCabe at his peak... but he seems to be out of position too often and his skating isn't strong enough that he doesn't get victimized whenever he gets out of position.

Miikka - Next to SJ, the Flames are the kings of under-achieving the past 5 years. And while their record is good so far, they've won probably half a dozen games they haven't deserved - at all. Their luck could run out any time. I was just saying that if they DO underachieve this year, a big shake up may be required. (And yes, Jokenin will be out of town before Dion...)

Tonight's game against Chicago is a good example. Holy crap, this team can still suck royal...

My dad and friend decided to scapegoat Dion tonight and had a serious conversation about trading him for a bona fide forward or two
