Fish Slapped!!

Posted 11:16 AM ET | Comments 12
Embarrassing. Humiliating. Disgusting. Oilers-esque. just a few adjectives to describe what Flames fans are feeling today. Looking at the score you can't help but think of the fish slap dance from Monty Python, it is very fitting and if I was more computer savvy I would have inserted a picture to accompany this blog.

9-1 is a score the best team in the league should hand out to the worst team in the league, a team that is so bad that they have their third string A.H.L. goalie playing not a former Vezina winner. The sad fact is the Flames are not only a mediocre team but as the season goes on are proving they are a bad team.

What is a slump? It is defined as a noticeable deterioration in performance or quality. So yes the Flames are slumping but isn't a slump supposed to be for a short time? Maybe a week. Maybe two at the most. So moving forward if the Flames keep losing they aren't slumping, they are bad. There's a difference. Winning five games in a row does nothing for you if you go on to lose 7 of the next 8.

People outside the organization are asking what the problem is, the people in the organization are pleading for patience, the truth lies in between. The Flames aren't horrible but they aren't great either, their payroll in total is only about 1 million less than San Jose yet they get whipped by eight goals?? That is a concern throughout the organization from the top down. There is a core of players here that seem unwilling to accept that they are the focus, Iginla has been brutal lately, Regher by his own admission was horrible last night, Phanuef is getting away with "playing better this year", Kipper got pulled... nice way to spend 23 million or so hey?

Fans are looking to Daryl Sutter and hoping for a miracle when his options are limited, the only pieces he can trade are pieces he needs, he can't trade away draft picks he doesn't have, he can't sign any saviors. In fact Daryl, maybe more than anyone, is probably feeling the sting of this fish slap because it comes with the realization that this team as it stands isn't good enough and he can't do anything about it.

I will say that San Jose beat Detroit by the same score in January of 2007. Detroit did advance to the Western Final. Time for a shake up just the same.

If these guys don't come out and play the best freakin' game of the year against Chicago, it's time to ship some guys out of town. This core is rotten, obviously, and its almost time to blow it up.

Landshark : Barely. Detroit wins their game in hand and we fall to 9th. I guess we're still in hunt though.

It's an 82 game marathon. Not a 82 game sprint. The sky isn't falling. Could be worse you could be the Oilers.

The issue in Calgary is if it's only 82 games heads will roll...
