Trade the goalie

Posted 3:19 PM ET | Comments 21
Quick, Rinne, Anderson, Boucher, Halak, Varlamov, Rask and Elliot.

Here is a list of Goalies that are not up for a Vezina yet have their teams in the playoffs, in some cases they even took their team there seemingly by themselves. When asked about trading Jarome Iginla most Flames fans like to think what would be brought back but don't actually want that trigger pulled but what about the other franchise guy? Kipper was the best player on this years Flames by far, he stole games and made tremendous saves but he does cost a lot as well and is it even needed? The team operates under a much more defensive system with Brent Sutter at the helm, the GAA is in the bottom 5 of the league and as you can see above the young goalies can get it done. Kipper could be the final nail a lot of teams need to win that cup, imagine Kipper on Washington. So if Darryl Sutter needs to do something bold...maybe it's ship out Kipper.

What would Kipper get on the market right now? I would argue more than Iginla would, I don't have faith Sutter would get full value for him though based on his recent trades but in reality he traded a 2nd for him (Vlasic) so if he could flip that commodity into a couple first rounders and a young goalie who can do it, maybe from the list above, I think it's worth a look.

The problem for Calgary is that the only spots they have open are actually at the grinder positions, Calgary simply has to move some hampering contracts.

Katalik- 3 mill for two more years
Langkow- 4.5 mil for two more years
Regehr- 4 mil for three more years

Right now it's too early to put Stajan on that list as I think his salary is good for a 2nd line center, Bouwmeester is another big ticket but I'll give him another season before I rip into him as he seemed to come around at the end of the year.

So if you move those three guys somehow some way you free up 11.5 MILLION is Salary for 27 goals this year. To put that in perspective Bourque had 27 goals by himself this year and cost the Flames 1.4 million roughly, these are all positions that cheaper guys could fill as well. Pelech is ready to come up, is a shut down guy and mean. Backlund is ready to play top six minutes at center and after leading the heat all year I think Jaffray deserves a shot at the NHL finally.

Hopefully all things are being considered because I'm watching this hockey thinking that the Flames could have been there if a couple changes had occurred.

Don't think you're getting a young guy with starter potential and a couple draft picks for Kipper. The bottom seems to have fallen out of the goalie market the last few years... you know, since the Leafs coughed up primo stuff for stopgap goalies.

disagreed. The Flames would be absolutely nowhere without Kipper, and even if they choose to rebuild I think Kipper has a better chance of being great a few years down the line than Iginla. Besides, A-Mar is completely correct - the market for goalies has been awful for a few years.

Awful idea. I don't want to go back to Wregget / Turek. It may look easy to find a consistent goalie, but it's not (look at Elliott tonight). You don't trade your MVP for 70 cents on the dollar which is what they would get.

Try to keep the opinions sane. This is your worst idea yet.

I got 6 of the above goalies who say that is a pretty sane assesment as they are not only in the playoffs but winning a first round, something kipper hasn't done in 6 years. Kipper would get top dollar, it's not a comparable to liken him to j.s.g. in toronto. Kipper has a great chance of being great for a few years that's why he's worth so much. In a defensive system a good goalie can be great (backstrom).

I think this is a great idea. Calgary has very good goalies in there system down in Abbbotsford. Shantz has been playing lights out (mondays home game excluded) Keetley has been consistantly good, and Irving is a highly rated goalie who has won big games. Goaltending in the Flames org is good for many years to come. A goalie like Kipper is a step above allmost all goalies in the league and GMs would be bidding big time for his services.

Don't agree with this idea at all unless you are doing a complete rebuild, and if you do that you don't just trade Kipper you trade Iggy too. Terrible idea imo.

thanks jmack, I just think it should be looked at, the problem is goal scoring and Iginla is not the issue there. If another goalie can get you in to the dance and you can get a lot for kipper...

Unless you get Semin and Backstom back in return from Washington then I say no deal. Just potentially solves one problem (scoring) by creating another (goaltending). We have good prospects but they will not be able to take the ship anytime soon.

I dont mind this idea. Flames in 6: nobody will take this ship as long as Kipper is here, no goalie will ever get the playing time necessary to be NHL ready til he is gone.

TRADE THE CORE TRADE THE CORE AND BUILD AROUND......OH $H1T

Probably one of the worst ideas I have heard...at first. I read this when you first posted it and mulled it over. The ONLY way you can make this happen is for 2 marquee players inluding a #1 center like a marleau and another proven top six. Then what though; resign Toskala and give Irving some time?

...maybe package Kipper with Regehr and try and pull a serious blockbuster??

Enjoy the view from the bottom of the standings like the oilers are gonna enjoy next year flames fans. Your team is going nowhere. Hopefully Darryl Sutter won't be too dumb and trade your first round pick next year as well

You gotta Keep Kipper

I liked what was said earlier, no goalie is ever going to get playing time unless kipper gets injured, i mean like lots have goalies have stepped up when the starter was injured (for example elliot) but give the goalies in abbotsford some time to mature, maybe in a year or 2
