According to Eklund, theres a chance that the Florida Panthers may be making Jay Bowmeester available. He is in RFA who could command about 5.5 mil on the market. The Sabres have not had a true Number 1 d-man since the days of Mike Ramsey.

With the glut of forwards the Sabres have, especially on the wings, I propose this deal:

Jay Bouwmeester for Jason Pominville.

As much as I love Poms, this is the typical "give to get" deal. The Sabres move a very good top 6 forward for the top 2 d-man they crave, without adding additional salary to the roster (see my budget post). Both should make roughly the same amount on the market.

This deal could work out great for both clubs. Buffalo gets a rock solid Number 1 d-pairing (Jay and Andrej Sekera), while still having the forwards to compensate for Poms' loss (Stafford, Paille, Bernier and Mac, with Gerbe and TK to follow), while Florida gets a great piece to build their young team around (and a scorer to replace the likely traded Olli Jokinen), while making room for top d prospect Keaton Ellerby.

Thoughts?

Well, the fact of me cringing at giving away Pomminville (probably our best 'captain' last year) mirrors the cringing someone would be doing in FLA at giving away Bouwmeester. Pommer is more than a scorer though, I don't really know how well-rounded Bmstr's game is...It would hurt, but I wouldn't want to burn the building down or anything.

I don't think I would. Pommer is a point-a-gamer, as well as being among our best two-way forwards. I agree Buowmeester would cost a pretty penny, and I'd love to see him the blue and gold, but I'd try to unload other talent for him before JP.

No way Florida would do that.

Umm, Phil Housley is a Hall of Famer Capt, forget about him? And no well in heck do I make that deal as a Sabres fan. Pommer is so good night in and night out.

Bowmeester is a great project. He has a great upside offensively but has been restricted by the coaching of Keenan and Martin. Would Lindy give him the green light? Can't see giving up one of your top performers for him! I expected J.P. to fall off the map without Briere this year but glad I was wrong. Sabres in 09!!!

Florida would do that yesterday.

interesting proposal, capt, but pommer has shown way too much potential and he ALWAYS shows up. we must lock him up. he's a leader that we need to keep on this team; when he was captain, the team as a whole played so much better. HOWEVER, i would consider giving up a package, perhaps involving stafford and afinogenov.

I wouldn't do it straight up, but throw some picks in there or possibly players and I could settle for it.

Nobody will take Afinogenov right now. How bout Paille, MacArthur and a first?

No thank you.

let's turn it around...if you're FL, would you?

I don't think Florida would, Excellent young Dmen are more scarce then excellent young forwards.

Whats JP contract status? Have to remember Florida may get caught in an offer sheet dispute or he could go UFA next year. (Bouwmeester)

Capmess: Pommer is RFA after 08-09.

Capmess again: you think Edmonton started a trend last year? you expect much more offer sheets on the way this summer?
May 15, 2008 12:39 PM ET | Delete
I think we will see a few offer sheets this summer, only because the RFA market is stronger than the UFA market. When you look at clubs that are in the upper tier of prospect talent, they can afford to make that move because they will have roster restraints in the next few seasons. Plus most of these clubs compete and are going to be taking picks in the back end of the draft. One thing is for clear though LA LA,teams better make sure the player they offer a sheet to make an impact. Take the Rangers, I think they should offer a sheet to Corey Perry or Ryan Suter. These are two possible All-Stars that fit thier needs right away.

how about no.you can have Kalinin for free though....no really ;)

ive thought the same about nashville.we are overloaded with d-men, so i wouldnt mind seeing us do the same ( albeit on a slightly lower level) with suter or zidlicky. NOT WEBER.
May 15, 2008 4:15 PM ET | Delete
Preds what would you ask the Rangers for in a Suter Deal?
May 15, 2008 10:09 PM ET | Delete
FYI: Edmonton didn't "start the trend, the Penner offer sheet was something like the 30th in the last 20 years. More offers sheets have been made to Oiler players then any other team.
