Well here we are. We can expect that the ink will be dry on a new contract for Mats Sundin this week. At least before Friday. I still have a mixed feelings about this. I understand that he is in the twilight of his career and that he wants to do everything he can to win with the Leafs. It's a great story but will it happen? Can it happen? I would hope that part of this new deal for Mats is that he has some input on what moves the Leafs plan to do in the off season. JFJ must have something up his sleeve either for the Draft of July 1 but can he really pull off what he wants to? I really hope that he can. This is going to be a huge test for him.

One rumor that started floating around on the weekend and has picked up a little steam is the future of McCabe with the Leafs. Yes he has the big contract with the "no moment clause" but he can still approve a trade. Right now there are talks of NYI being very interested in their former captain. I really only see his happening with a sign and trade deal for someone like Blake (just a guess).

I would like to see this happen if possible. I think it would be good for everyone involved. It would be a family move for Bryan (his wife is from there) and he would still be a top d-man for a team. The Leafs could free up cap space and move Kubina to the top line and get him the ice team he needs to get his numbers up again.

Carlo has still not signed. Not sure what's up with that.

As for July 1. All the reports put the Leafs in full gear for getting Ryan Smyth. Again, I think this is a long shot and his signing will not solve all the Leafs problems but it would add another strong leader to the team and a top player. However they could look at getting two players for the price of Smyth. Hartnell, Kayria, Nylander are some options.

It will be interesting to see what happens...

Cheers
