"Leafs Options"
Toronto, ON • Canada • 2010 Years Old • Male
It seems like the odds are greatly in favour of Burke trading Kaberle by the 15th (likely on the few days leading up to their deadline) and it has been indicated that there are somewhere between 5 and 8 offers. First I'll explain why, then we'll go through some options, with no potential team left behind.

Kaberle is the longest serving Leaf and the only player who has been on the Leafs since their last stretch of playoff seasons in the early 2000s before the lockout. He is also the only Leaf left in the days of the "Muskoka Five" (Sundin, McCabe, Kubina, Tucker and Kaberle) who saw the team slowly deteriorate into the team that inevitable became 29th in the league. Many think that for the team to move on, Kaberle needs to leave. Burke always talked about the Leafs player's sense of entitlement and started picking players off, Kaberle is the only one to survive. This month and a half period is the first chance that Burke has to trade Kaberle and its likely something he's been planning to do since he got here. He's also the Leafs best bargaining chip and after he got Phaneuf and Giguère without anything better than Kaberle, he's expecting to get something for him. And more than that, he's expected to. And with the Leafs crowded on defence and weak on offence, it looks like Burke wants him gone as much as he wants something for him.

So for who?
What teams possibly want Kaberle?
And who do the have to offer.

Anaheim - Joffrey Lupul, Bobby Ryan, Jason Blake
Boston - Marc Savard, Michael Ryder, Marco Strum, Blake Wheeler
Columbus - Derek Brassard, Nikita Filatov
Edmonton - Shawn Horcoff, Andrew Cogliano, Sam Gagner, Linus Omark, Alexandre Giroux, Gilbert Brule
LA - Jarret Stoll, Brad Richardson, Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn
NJ - Jason Arnott, Brian Rolston
Philadelphia - Jeff Carter, James Van Riemsdyk, Daniel Carcillo, Claude Giroux
San Jose - Ryane Clowe, Devin Setoguchi, Joe Pavelski
Tampa Bay - Ryan Malone
Washington - Alexander Semin, Thomas Fleischmann, Books Laich

Now there are maybe some other teams and plays that have more to do with prospects and draft picks, but I don't think thats likely given Burke's desire to fix things fast. Its important to note that because Kaberle wants to stay in the East, any team in the East has a bigger chance of extending his contract so he's more valuable for them.

So.....
Anaheim - Joffrey Lupul, Bobby Ryan
It has been suggested that they are trying to sign Kariya and Selanne, adding two more top 6 forwards would make either Lupul or Ryan expendable. Ryan isn't signed and seems to want to leave while the organization has every intention to sign him. If he holds out he could be on the block. If he is resigned and Selanne and Kariya sign, Lupul would be underutilized and overpaid as a 3rd liner. And with Blake's unmovable 4m contract, they can't afford to have more than one 4 million dollar 3rd liner. Many have suggested that signing Andy Sutton means they no longer need Kaberle but they still really only have 3 top 4 defencemen.

Boston - Marc Savard, Michael Ryder, Marco Strum, Blake Wheeler
Is it safe to say that a trade with Boston will have to work out better for Boston? Marc Savard wants to come to Toronto and Boston wants him and his contract to leave. Many in Toronto say that Savard is not enough. Others in Boston think that Kaberle is not enough. Burke said he's not interested but maybe a non-Kaberle related deal is in the works. He would be in Toronto for the long haul though, something else Burke has no interest in. Ryder has a really bad contract. If he comes to Toronto it will be because Kaberle isn't enough, so Toronto would have to take his contract on as a seal. If Savard is seen to not be enough, Marco Strum could be added. He's not a bad player but is a tad overpaid and with Horton and Seguin, he's more expendable. Blake Wheeler was just signed in arbitration but Bostons desire to go over the cap to sign him is a sign that they want him. Also his for Kaberle straight up only hurts their cap situation.

Columbus - Derek Brassard, Nikita Filatov
Many thought that after they didn't walk from Stralman, they were out from Kaberle. This may be true but rumor has it they've been looking at him for a while. They seem to be pretty committed to Filatov and he just came back to Columbus early so his stock just went up in the Columbus books. Brassard was just resigned as well. Still people are talking and I didn't want to leave this out. He'd be a good veteran to have on this team to help bring them back to the playoffs.

Edmonton - Shawn Horcoff, Andrew Cogliano, Sam Gagner, Linus Omark, Alexandre Giroux, Gilbert Brule
Horcoff has a bad contract. Still would be a top 6 on the Leafs though. And with plenty of prospects in the system a package deal wouldn't be out of the question. They also have a slew of underachieving young-ish centres that the Leafs could really use. If they try to get rid of Souray, as many suggest, they could really use some veteran leadership on defence.

LA - Jarret Stoll, Brad Richardson, Wayne Simmonds, Brayden Schenn
They have plenty of cap space and desire to do something. Simmonds and Richardson seem to be on the block and veteran defence like Kaberle is exactly what they could use. Brayden Schenn is likely a player that Toronto would love to have and probably who they wanted to draft a couple years ago to put with his brother Luke. They want to make a move and they're the team that wants him most that has no cap issues to deal with this year.

NJ - Jason Arnott, Brian Rolston
They have no cap space if Kovalchuck ends up with them. If they do they wouldn't mind getting Arnott or Rolston off their books. I'm not sure if Toronto is a good fit for these guys though. They could use another defenceman and reportedly want him. I 'm not sure there's anyone who the leafs would want from them that they would be willing to give up.

Philadelphia - Jeff Carter, James Van Riemsdyk, Daniel Carcillo, Claude Giroux
Kaberle for Carter and a 1st? I think that sounds good. Case closed. They don't really need another defenceman but have some cap issues that could give them a little bit of leverage but like NJ, Philadelphia wont give up anyone that the Leafs would take for him. Kaberle+ for Carter or VanRiemsdyk and cap relief.

San Jose - Ryane Clowe, Devin Setoguchi, Joe Pavelski
According to rumors they are in on him as much as anyone else. Sharks fans say Kaberle isn't worth any of these guys but others think he is worth more than any. San Jose always loves to add some offense and Kaberle is a playmaker. He would be a good fit. But Pavelski was just resigned and Clowe and Setoguchi round out their top 6 nicely I don't know if they'd want to part with either of them. I should note that they're in an alright cap position so they could potential take on Kaberle's extra hit if they trade Setoguchi. This extra space could be for free agent to fill a space though.

Tampa Bay - Ryan Malone
They are rumored to be out but a straight out Kaberle for Malone could be what they're both looking for. I think both sides think they'd be getting the shorter end though.

Washington - Alexander Semin, Thomas Fleischmann, Books Laich
Semin for Kaberle? Am I crazy? With Semin having one year on his contract and people suspecting him to go to the KHL, that may be the only year that his contract is worth. Kaberle meanwhile would likely be resigned. But a one year player isn't what Toronto needs, they'd only do it if they feel they can convince him to stay more than Washington. Fleischmann and Laich would be good fits but Washington likely wont part with them too easily but with Nylander and Backstrom, centres are in a logjam. The defence on the other hand isn't with only 5 defence signed, Kaberle would be a key addition and provide some key leadership that they need.

Its taken me a while to write this and I'll be super pissed if he's been traded while I'm writing this. But considering its not even the 10th, I'm not to worried.
Thanks for reading, comments would be appreciated.
