Well, after a thrilling advertisement for the game of hockey that was Game One, we've come to this: a real crossroads, with Anaheim's old-fashioned physical play (honed by a lot of WHL talent like Getzlaf, Kunitz, the Niedermayers et al) going up against Ottawa's mostly-European speed and finesse (which is no slap against Selanne for the Ducks or Neil for the Sens). It's a...

I agree with Hull and Cherry

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
I have to say that I did like the segment after the 2nd period during game 4 last night with Don Cherry visiting the NBC booth. As far as the opinion of both Cherry and Brett Hull I have to agree that the majority would like to see fighting as part of the NHL and I do agree that ratings wouldn't suffer, but would be better if it was more common to see a little sparring...

Paging Don Waddell!

Posted Friday | Comments 0
March 15, 2002: The Atlanta Thrashers trade Ruslan Zainullin to the Calgary Flames for Marc Savard. In 182 games with the Thrashers, Savard went on to score 63 goals and 196 points. After the 2005-2006 season, Savard priced himself out of Atlanta, signing with the Boston Bruins for 4 years, at $5 million per season. Since that point, Thrashers GM Don Waddell has continuous...

Congratulations Mr.Bettman

There have been few occasions over the last decade or so where Gary Bettman was the envy of the other major sports league's commissioners. This is one of them. League revenues are surging, players are being paid well and there is parity like we've rarely seen before. But most importantly there are no Barry Bonds, Mike Vicks or Tim Donaghys. Mr.Bettman doesn...

I was shocked that the Blues traded Dougie Weight and It is truly sad to see him go. This is word-for-word from the first half of my regular Blog just posted, but I thought it deserved a spot all on it's own ... 10/13/08 It was Kids Day on Long Island, and fans came out as the Isles tripped, clutched, held sticks, grabbed, fought, slashed, roughed, hooked, cross checked and probably did about 80% of it all over again. Last Friday night the season started with the hopes of a shining youth movement getting underway to a successful first game. I can't begin to explain how good it felt to see the Isles give up a 2-0 lead and manage a win. Yeah I know...how can anyone be happy that their team gave up a 2-0 lead in the third period? A good pass. Of course there are players who score their goals with impressive dekes and flashy moves, but those players are called stars...superstars. Not the Dallas Stars. You will never hear me complain of the New York Islanders beating the New York Rangers. Ever. Although the rivalry may have died down on the ice over the years, it has not died down for the fans, and a win is a win however they may come. Last night's game against Ottawa started off with a fearful barrage of shots from the Sens. The Isles shootout victory over the Vancouver Canucks Monday night lifted them to 12th place in the Eastern Conference. For the overwhelming majority of the season the Islanders played their back-up and third string goaltenders, Joey MacDonald and Yann Danis. Once again, Isles fans are getting to see an Islanders team that is incapable of holding a lead. Undrafted D Brandon Aquino set to ink 3 year entry level contract with the Buds after a stellar season with BK Farjestad in Sweden last season. He will be playing in their AHL affiliate Marlies next season and will hopefully to come up into the Leafs line up late in the regular season.
Now that the draft is concluded it’s time to preview the upcoming off-season for the New York Rangers. I stayed away from submitting my own mock drafts or draft pick profiles since I don’t have the insights necessary to offer anything you haven’t already seen on TSN or other hockey websites. I don’t watch Canadian Junior hockey so aside from some highlights I haven...

No trading Souray?

Posted Sunday | Comments 0
Now that Souray cleared waivers, it's clear that a suitable trade isn't available. It's likely the Oilers will need to accept a poor contract and possibly an undesirable player to boot. Leading to another problem of it's own, a trade that could haunt the Oilers for years to come. However, in the best interest of the Oilers, they shouldn't make that trade...not yet anyways....
With the dismal season the Oilers had last season, you can't help but wonder how the youngsters such as Hall, Eberle, Paajarvi-Svensson & Omark are going to do. Hall is one of the most hyped first overall picks of the new millenium. That's a lot of pressure to put on the kid's shoulders. His years in Windsor made him more of a hot commodity than the new iPhone 4 t...
lately i have noticed a stupid an really unfounded string of Souray haters guys like richard cloutier who are really low balling the talented defense man. After a month or so i believe these "haters" will change their tune watching the guy with hardest shot in the game on the oil PP scoring goals and being a assist machine (if ANYONE on the oilers can tip). His first pass...

Rangers Youth Being Served

Posted Sunday | Comments 6
Many Rangers fans have been critical of coach Tortorella in the past. We've complained of his constant line changes, his demeanor towards some of the young talent and the way in which the team always seems to start games off slowly. I would argue though that Torts has been spot on since the beginning. Yes, I would admit he has made mistakes, like any coach will. But whe...

Gut Check Time for Rangers

Posted Monday | Comments 0
The New York Rangers have entered into unfamiliar territory after dropping their 4th game in a row. During a time that was supposed to be one where the Rangers thrived after getting 4 regulars back into the lineup, they have instead played the inconsistent hockey that has plagued them the past few seasons. It's too quick to jump to conclusions and say that this team is the...

There are some nights when I think Don Cherry has lost his mind - and suits and ties do nothing to convince me otherwise. That being said, Don Cherry was 100%, absolutely spot on tonight. The four points Grapes made tonight were brilliant: 1) What the hell was Hamhuis doing taking a dirty, cheap shot at Bolland's head? 2) Bryzgalov is a joker and should keep his ...

Canucks Full Marks for Win

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
Congrats to the Canucks for their win. Well deserved. A few high level comments on the game: 1) Why did the Canucks change their style in the 3rd? They started to hang back and let Chicago gain the offensive zone. Chicago could not get into the Canucks zone the first 2 periods. Then in the 3rd Vancouver started to hang back and defend the lead and Chicago started to ca...
I don't believe that there will be any "HUGE" signing this summer from Brian Burke. I believe that perhaps Andy Mac may be an option, but is he available? Mr Augello wrote that he would be a nice fit, I also think that Andy would be a great fit. Not only would he be a relative bargain due to injuries, but he could actually end up being the type of guy that Kessel needs...

Pittsburgh area native Brandon Saad will be playing in his 3rd straight Hawks preseason game tonight against Washington at the UC and Andrew Brunette also makes his debut as a Hawk tonight. Chicago's number one netminder, Corey Crawford, will take his place between the pipes for the Hawks tonight for the first time this preseason. Click here to read more of my Haw...
On Wednesday, the Chicago Blackhawks sent arguably their top organizational prospect in Brandon Saad (sorry Kyle Beach) back to his OHL team, the Saginaw Spirit. Though Saad registered no points in his two games with the Blackhawks in the early regular season, he did play well during the preseason against several division rivals, which included getting time on a line wit...
Wouldn’t it be nice if just once Ron MacLean actually challenged one of Don Cherry’s outlandish assertions and made him support it with some substance? Seriously though, if you throw in a few Cherry-wanna-be’s, like Mike Milbury or Doug MacLean, the so-called expert analysis segment of your favourite hockey program is filled to the brim with unsupported rhetoric f...

Donald S Cherry

What a guy! Isn't he beautiful?! I have chosen to write my next blog about one of my favourite sports personalities of all time. Nothing irritates me more then people who constantly berate and chastise Don Cherry when they don't even know the guy. Off-screen, what does Don do? Spends his time helping the hockey community in every way he can. He visits hospitals...
Andy McDonald.......you're close, you're really close to making every St. Louis Blues fan very happy. Your speed, your vision, your finishing touch, your experience.....oh how we've missed you. You are the missing component in making the Blues go from a contender to a legitimate favorite come playoff time. Your impact on the ice will echo a great deal off the ice where ...
Andy McDonald came back with a vengeance last night at home against the Sharks. The Blues looked instantly charged up. They looked faster. They looked tougher. They definitely didn't look like a team who played the night before. The previously absent power play showed up. The Blues looked better. Andy McDonald.....you are the man. Does that mean that Doug Armstro...

Joey MacDonald: The New #2!

Posted Monday | Comments 0
It almost comes as no surprise really but Ty Conklin has been placed on waivers by the Detroit Red Wings. This is coming after Joey MacDonald shocked and stole the hearts of all those in Detroit. He also stole a roster spot as the number two goaltender from Ty. Jimmy Howard is finally back after missing the past 8 games with a broken finger, thus making it ma...
I know I promised (on Facebook) that I wouldn't make any Monster jokes, but I couldn't help myself. Wings have inked former Toronto backstop Jonas Gustavsson to a 2 year deal. Gustavsson went 39-45-15 in 107 appearances with the Maple Leafs over the past three seasons with a 298 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. To be honest, I’m not terribly exci...

The Temperature Rises

Fans now are starting to see the light. Neither side is really all that concerned about the fans (which we all knew at heart). Up until recently, at least the players had some sympathy, but that is support is eroding quickly. At this point I have passed the point of frustration into the realm of downright angry! At the very least can you sit in a room and talk or make ...
In the past couple of days, NHLPA head Donald Fehr spoke at a meeting of the Canadian Auto Workers union. Apparently the membership of the CAW have been too busy building cars to pay much attention to...

Bell Centre Brawlin!

Maybe Don Cherry was right when he boldly stated that the Leafs new toughness is the reason for a much steadier and confident game play by the young team. I can remember thinking so many times last year..."IF Colton Orr were here that guy wouldn't be hacking Kessel to ice everytime he touched the puck". And when you look at the 1-0 loss to the bruins this year it was a c...

Flyers Post-Deadline Outlook

With the Flyers picking up their game after an abysmal start and catapulting into third place in the Metropolitan Division before the Olympic break, it was clear they were not going to be sellers this season. If I Was MacTavish

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
Craig MacTavish has made some interesting moves this past year. Some good (Perron, Scrivens, Fasth, Hendricks) and some meh but safe (Fraser). MacTavish knows we have to shore up the defense and change the top 6. But will he do anything about it? Hemsky stated, as all Oiler fans have, we cannot keep playing merry-go-round in the bottom 6 and bottom pairing. If we do, he...

Does every NHL team have a drafting identity?? When discussing prospects/potential selections I've heard multiple categories used to describe the reasonings for why an NHL team will select who they will select... these include: 1. BPA - Best Player Available 2. Organizational needs 3. Safe pick 4. Transferable NHL skills/size 5. Previous chemistry with othe...
Last summer we saw Chiarelli trade Boyd Gordon for Korpikoski; a move which angered some people. Gordon was a great defensive centre, and a right shot to top it off. The Wagon Line of Hendricks, Gordon, Klinkhammer provided Edmonton with a great shutdown trio. Trading the pivot of that line for a 3rd/4th line winger with a bloated contract was... strange. Or it least it...
