Summer is over and the NHL's regular season is finally here! Changes abound, but how does your team stack up in our initial NHL Power Rankings? Disagree? Have suggestions? PM or comment! 1. Ottawa Senators From 1-6, their talent on defense is unmatched. Spezza and Heatley are simply magical. Is Emery's health a concern? Can Eaves and Kelly pick up w...
Surprises abound, except for the top two positions that see Ottawa and Detroit holding strong after the first week of play. Capitals and Lightning undefeated? Flames and Sabres winless? What's going on here?! As always, suggestions and comments welcome! And if you want to see last week's rankings, you can find them under the archives link to the right --> [...
The Sens are still roosted at the top of the Power Rankings, but Minnesota and a number of other clubs are closing in fast. Other teams like the Islanders, Capitals and Predators find themselves barely treading water after laying eggs in the 2nd week of the season. Suggestions and comments welcome! And if you want to see any previous rankings installments, you can fin...
Here is a quote from tsn.ca's (http://www.tsn.ca/fantasy_news/feature/?fid=549) power rankings.
Chris Mason opened the season with two outstanding games and has struggled ever since. Perhaps it's time to take a step back and give backup Dan Ellis some work.
Okay...I get that the Preds have lost five in a row and that Mason had some shaky games but ...

Predators 1/4 Season Review

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
So we are a quarter of the way through the season and I thought I would offer up my analysis of the Preds on a player by player basis. Hockey is a team sport but when you analyze a team, it helps if you can have some individual stats to compare with. So here it goes. Forwards: Martin Erat -Currently leads the team with 24 points and is well on his way to passing his...
So here we are at the mid-point of the year and it's not been a pretty one for the Hurricanes. GP W L OL P GF GA Carolina Hurricanes 42 20 18 4 44 130 137 44 points in 42 games and a record at exactly .500 does not exactly scream champion. Injuries seem to have hit there peak as the team is missing: Scott Walker, Bret Hedican,...
Collectively, the West has a 57-31-7 against the East, yet 5 of the top 8 teams in the rankings are in the East...? Only one team from the West that has played 4 or more games against the East has a losing record against the East: Chicago at 3-4-1. Two teams are 1-2 against the East: San Jose and Minnesota. Only one team in the East has had real success against ...
Well I noticed Ek the other day had the top five and five worst teams in the off-season out , and i decided to elaborate on it by creating in my eyes the top 30 . So from first to last here it is. Remember this is not who has the better team , but rather who has improved signifigantly. 1)Edmonton-Added another further scoring threat in Cole , cont' developm...

Fantasy Top 50 Pre-season

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
Oh boy, we are just days away from the regular season now. I wanted to post the 2nd installment of FT50 before the regular season gets under way, you may notice a few changes. Any difference from the last, may be because of any announcements or rumours of line combinations that I have heard since the last post. Also the news of Gonchar's injury has dropped him off the list...
If anybody has read any of my blogs they may have realized that I love stats. My day job has been pretty slow lately so I spend alot of time scanning NHL.com and hockeybuzz. My newest here is compiling a list of the early season power players. I have ranked them by counting goals as 2 points and assists as 1. WP is weighted points WP/G is weighted points per game Pl...
I left objectivity out of this and concentrated only on the stats. I started with players who have 30 pts this year. I then removed any players with a +/- in the negative. Then I whittled it down to players who play 20 min+ a game. To be a great 2 way forward you have to play in all situations. So next players were eliminated with less than 1min/game on pk and 3 1/2m...

Week 1 Power Rankings: Top Ten

Posted Thursday | Comments 1
Please read and post your thoughts and what you like/dislike or what you'd change. Well, it's early... and it's very safe to say that Power Rankings at this point in time in the season don't mean very much. They're mostly a combination of last year's finish and this year's promise. I like James Duthie's column on TSN.ca about Premature Evaluation, in reference to ju...

Week 2 Power Rankings: Top Ten

Posted Thursday | Comments 1
What do you we know so far? Well, safe to say most of us are wondering if some of these teams are contenders or pretenders. The Atlantic Division is going to be TOUGH. Injuries are taking their toll around the league, and Toronto has lost 6 straight; believe me, all of Canada knows the Leafs have lost 6 straight. Should I say it again? The Leafs have lost 6 straight. ...

Week 3 Power Rankings: Top Ten

Posted Thursday | Comments 1
What have we learned so far? Let's face it, in order to thrive in the "new" NHL, you have to do a number of things well. This week, the top team's show us how important it is to draft (or acquire) young talent that can start and make an impact right away. This has been a key for teams that have won the cup in each of the last 4 seasons and by the looks of it, this trend...

10 Week rankings

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
The NHL season is ten weeks old, so I decided to post my rankings of the 30 teams so far. Stats are through Sunday, Nov. 29. Rank.......Team.......Record 1.) San Jose 18-6-4 It's hard to argue against San Jose as the best team in the league, especially when you consider they've played only ten of 28 at home. 2.) Chicago 16-6-3 The Blackhawks were playing gr...

Power Rankings Jan.6

1. New Jersey - Great team, no weaknesses 2. Chicago - Another great team, but is feeding on a weak Central Divison 3. San Jose - Is this the best one line team in hockey? 4. Buffalo - Miller for Vezina 5. Washington - Offense is covering weak goaltending 6. Pittsburgh - Still very good, but not dominant. 7. Vancouver - Great 5 on 5 play and Power Play 8. Calgary - ...
Years ago, drafting goalies was easy. Every season, you could argue over order, but you couldn't go wrong with Roy, Brodeur or Hasek. These days, it's much harder to predict who will be the elite fantasy goalies from year to year. Consider this: the top 5 fantasy scorers from 2008 included the likes of: Tim Thomas, Niklas Backstrom, Steve Mason, and Cam Ward. If you s...

Week 18 Power Rankings

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
If you haven't gotten the drill by now, here's some information... I'm doing Power Rankings. However, unlike most websites, I don't pull names out of a hat, or collect votes among "experts". I actually use a system. Mathematics. I'm aware that the hockey analysts of the world love numbers, but seem to hate math. Well... Nonetheless, here are the Week 18 Power Rankings. ...
Today's fantasy hockey stats and formulas can provide more information than one person can possibly interpret at one time. It's becoming easier every year to get lost in the numbers. I used to go thru some pretty intense number crunching when trying to predict how well players would perform in the upcoming season. Getting data from previous seasons and computing differe...

Red Wings are #1

[img:right]http://media.mlive.com/redwings_impact/photo/10581756-large.jpg[/img] Detroit, who has been unbeatable at home since December took the reigns to the top spot in this week's NHL Power Rankings. They dethroned the New York Rangers who continue to win but aren't dominating like that team from Hockeytown. The Red Wings broke the NHL single season record of most c...
I was thinking about the President's Trophy and its curse. Past winners and losers, etc., so I decided to do some research and figure out what each Cup winners' (since 1986) regular season final ranking was. There are two lists of rankings. One by final conference rank, one by overall. Regular season final ranking (Overall NHL standings) and number of Cup winners p...

MJ's Power Rankings (Oct 16)

Posted Wednesday | Comments 4
In my spare time, I pythoned up a sim, but part of that sim was creating a power ranking based on a self-invented hundred balance system (ie, 132 = 32% stronger than average; 75 = 25% weaker than average). This system is entirely statistically based with zero input, but I shall only explain why I "believe" the teams are where they are and what issues they might need to ad...

MJ's Power Rankings (Oct 23)

Posted Wednesday | Comments 17
Greetings! I have returned for my next instalment of power rankings. If you have read the first one, then you'll be familiar with what I am about to say: these power rankings are based entirely on statistical performances and they are churned out by a python code that examines every game in the last ten regular season weeks played (bleeding into the last year for now). N...
In the spirit of Hallowe'en and All Saints Day comes this week's power rankings, which I'll now be making on a monthly basis. I must repeat the disclaimer: the stats entirely determine the power ranking: I only try to rationalize what the stats are pointing out. 1. Boston Bruins 9-1-2 POWER 130 LW: 1 The Scary: Boston's dominance in both NFL and NH...
