The Calgary Flames were frankly an embarrassment tonight. They did nothing right. They were not skating and not hitting and Kipper was, well, not good. The forwards continue to stand still. The defense continues to back up in their zone, they are just panicking every time they touched the puck. Our defense is slow, plain and simple; we cannot continue to be caught fla...
Lindy Ruff took over the head coaching job in Buffalo in July 1997. Since then Buffalo has only made it to the finals once, and everyone knows how that one ended (cough cough...no goal...cough cough). During that same time period, there have been 137 coaching changes in the NHL. That's 11.42 changes per year, or about one-third of all NHL teams. Darcy Regier has als...
If the last 10 years are any indication, we should expect a few coaching changes over the upcoming season. There were 11 coaching changes so far since the calendar turned to 2009. That means over 1/3 of the teams have a new guy behind the bench. So, is there anyone left to fire? Also consider, there are only 2 coaches left in the league who have been in place for more ...
A list of things that MLSE needs to do differently, top to bottom, to make this franchise a proud one once again. Mentality - Successfully instill the mentality that playing in Toronto isn't a right, it is a privilege. Brian Burke insisted he would send non-performers through waivers. I have regrouped and am not quite ready to hit the panic button quit...
As we continue to look back at the past decade in the NHL, there were a number of rule changes that have significantly affected the state of the game today. Many of these were positive changes, but a few were downright awful. Most of the changes in the last 10 years happened as a direct result of the lockout. Here's a look at the 4 best and 4 worst rule changes over the...

The Coaching Plank

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
It's been a pretty good year so far for job security in the NHL ranks compared to recent history, but nothing lasts forever. Last season, 1/3 of the teams changed coaches. This year, (not counting Gretzky "stepping down"), only one coach has been fired so far, and the results of that move haven't been spectacular. So, it remains to be seen how many more dominoes will fa...
With a spot in the bottom 5 league wide freshly secured, the fear of giving up 2 lottery picks to a divisional rival because more of a reality. It also becomes more difficult to right the ship and end the free-fall. The team lacks confidence, can't score consistently, has horribly timed defensive lapses, sporadic weak goals, increasingly ineffective special teams and only ...

New Rules

After a long hiatus I am back to writing. I know that the NHL added some new rules this year. I like some changes and dislike others. I like the removal of the spin move on the shootout. This move always had the puck going away from the goal which is not the design of the shootout. I also like the move to speed up face-offs after an icing. This will keep the intended...

Great Start, Now What?

Posted Monday | Comments 8
It's been a breath of fresh air to have a team to cheer for again. Our Habs this year have come flying out of the gate. They have had some hiccups along the way so far, but overall its been a fast and exciting team which has been night and day from last years roll over and die edition. Early returns suggest that we won the Galchenyuk and Pacioretty trades hands down...
