For all the mistakes former Isles General Manager Mike Milbury made during his tenure — where do we begin? — trading for Yashin is the biggest blunder in franchise history. New York gave up top-ticket defenseman Zdeno Chara and a first-round pick that ended up being Jason Spezza. And on top of that... he turned around and signed him to a 10 year $90 million co...
10 Reasons the Sabres will win tonight 1 – Sabres skate like the wind, Witt and co. is just too dam slow 2 – Islanders have nothing left after giving max efforts in games 2 and 3 3 - Roy, Afinigenov, Vanek line will dominate 4 – Miller is better than Dipeitro 5 – Mike Schopp says so... and Bulldog agreed (imagine that?) 6 - Chris Drury is a hockey god and t...
When the Islanders acquired both Michael Peca and Alexei Yashin on consecutive days surrounding the 2001 entry draft, it signaled the dawning of a new era for the franchise. Despite paying the high price of Zdeno Chara and the draft pick that would eventually be used to select Jason Spezza (as well as throw-in Bill Muckalt) in return for Yashin, initial reactions were posi...
Every hockey web site, message board, forum, or mailing list at this point in the off-season has one Ryan Smyth rumor or another almost daily, so placing faith in any one rumor at this point is just about as sure-footed a strategy as throwing darts at a map of NHL cities. Personally, I've remained optimistic about the Islanders chances of bringing Smytty back, despite much...

Mr. Sather

Please DON'T even think of sigining Alexei Yashin.
And, in the end, after making us sweat it out for a couple of months, they got it right! Alexei Yashin’s tumultuous tenure as captain of the New York Islanders has finally come to an end. Whatever sales pitch Ted Nolan and Garth Snow threw at Charles Wang worked, though it must have been a tough decision for the Islanders owner. Regardless, as I have written in previo...

The Story of Alexei

Posted Thursday | Comments 0
The day of June 7, 2007 will be a day Islander fans will remember for a long time. The day they bought out the contract of their captain Alexei Yashin. Back in 2001 Alexei signed the ridiculous $87.5-million contract for about 10 years. In 1999 Yashin sat out the entire year because of contract problems, then in 2001 on draft day, the big trade happened. Ottawa traded thei...

Yashin to Montreal???

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
Ok...I will admit, the prospect of a Samsonov - Yashin - Kovalev line sounds explosive...on paper. But do we really expect the Habs to make the same mistake 3 times in a row here? 05-06 Season: Kovalev signed to a 4 year deal worth 20.25 Million (Failure) 06-07 Season: Samsonov signed to a 2 year deal worth 7.05 Million (Failure) 07-08 Season: YASHIN?!?!?! Come on ...
On Trade Deadline Day 2007, the Islanders made a bold statement to their fans and the rest of the league that the organization would no longer settle for mediocrity. Trading former first-round picks Robert Nilsson and Ryan O'Marra, along with their 2007 first-round pick for Ryan Smyth was a loud and clear message that the fans would no longer be asked to look to the never ...

What the Leafs Should do

Posted Saturday | Comments 0
I think the moves that would help the leafs would be to sign Alexei Yashin and Micheal Peca. Next get rid of Raycroft and Kubina in a trade to the Yotes for Jovanovski and Cujo. Then sign Brian Berad who in won the Calder in the 1996-1997 season and racked up some good points with Columbus in the 2005-2006. IMO that would be the best set of moves for my Leafs. Thoug...

Yashin is a joke!

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
for his agent to say that he will not go a penny under his worth on the open market is a crock and simply a very stingy and selfish approach to getting his client back in the good graces of the nhl (teams and fans). if yashin was smart, he would take a 1 million dollar contract and go play for a contender with big name players like the avalanche or mighty ducks. he cou...

Redwings could use Yashin

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
After signing Rafalski, Drake & Hasek, the wings are still lacking scoring for next season. This is where Alexei Yashin could help. Although, he is a selfish player, the Redwings are very thin in the scoring department. The top line of Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Holmstrom can not continue to carry the teams scoring on their back. I think Yashin would fill in well ...

Kovalev Needs to Go!

I do not dislike Russians. I do not think Russian players are inferior to Canadian players. In fact, I believe that Russian players are the most exciting players in the game-and look at the talent it has produced: Malkin, Ovechkin, Markov, etc. However, there are certain Russian players in this league that either think there better than everyone else, or there just lazy-ma...

In the "Hockey Hearsay" section of sportsnet.ca Carol Alt attempted to defend her boy toy, Alexei Yashin, calling the bought out former Isles captain "misunderstood" "I think he needs to go where people understood him and where he's looked at like a god," Alt told the Ottawa Citizen. "He wants to come back (to the NHL), but I just think he needs to clear his hea...
Last night, at 11pm, I got the call. I had heard rumors back when I was traversing the French Quarter of New Orleans early last week. But I held off, thinking it would not happen. That it simply could not happen. Could it? Last night, it did happen. Alexei Yashin will be returning to the Isles for a 4 year, 16.5 million deal. This was done between his new agent, Bori...

Montreal - Plan B?

Posted Tuesday | Comments 0
It seems that Montreal has been tripped up in the free-agent chase early on, with the chase of Mats Sundin. What happens if Sundin continues to take his time? (1) Alexi Yashin - A big step down from Sundin, but a player with a lot to prove and a desire to return to the NHL. He and Kovalev could be an interesting fit, BUT only if he's willing to swallow some pride and ta...
We've all seen in movies where a psychiatrist will say a word and the patient will respond with the first thing that comes to their head. So here's my version of a scene where a psychiatrist is diagnosing a hockey fan: P: So What do you think of when I say...YASHIN!? HF: SELFISH!! P: But wasn't he a four time all star? Didn't he have a .87 PPG last year? HF: Yeah but...
10 year deal.....12 year deal.....15 year deal.....17 year deal. Which of these deals is related to the New York Islanders? Any and all would be the correct answer in a previous year—but not in 2010. How many of you fans have come onto these boards and poked fun of, cried, and lamented about how pathetic our team owner—Charles Wang has become. And that lame brain...

Around the NHL

Posted Wednesday | Comments 0
Here are a few quick thoughts about some happenings around the NHL. Draper Retires And so the NHL bids farewell to one of its fiercest competitors. Few would dispute that age was finally catching up to Draper these past couple seasons. However, his recent difficulties cannot tarnish a brilliant career that saw him help the Wings to four Stanley Cups, take...
