I've been reading blogs and their comments for awhile now and find some funny as to bragging about past exploits of their favorite team, where teams should be and not be and find some of the reasoning to be a bit tired and not at all accurate with reality so I put this little history lesson together for my first blog on HB for others to enjoy, learn some hockey facts and for reference in possible future arguments. I hope you enjoy it and look forward to any/all criticism. I would like to thank both wikipedia and about.com whom I used as a reference as well as nhl.com's history section. Enjoy.
Lord Stanley of Preston in 1892, at a sports banquet in Ottawa said "I have for some time been thinking that it would be a good thing if there were a challenge cup, which would be held from year to year by the leading hockey club in Canada. There does not appear to be any outward sign of a championship at present, and considering the interest that hockey matches now elicit, I am willing to give a cup which shall be held annually by the winning club." The following year Canada's governor-general was true to his word, purchasing a silver bowl and naming it the Dominion Hockey Challenge Cup. Hockey folks went with a less formal name, the Stanley Cup.
The Stanley Cup officially turned pro in 1910, when the National Hockey Association took possession of it. But it was not until 1926 that the National Hockey League emerged indisputably as the top league in North America, effectively taking control of the Cup. That control was formalized in an agreement signed with the Cup trustees in 1947. The Original Six are the six teams that comprised the NHL from 1942 to 1967, when the league expanded from six to 12 teams. The name is not accurate however because NHL membership fluctuated throughout the 1920s and 1930s, as teams like the Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Pirates, Montreal Maroons and New York Americans came and went in the years prior to 1942.
An alphabetical list of teams, when they joined the NHL, how may cups they have won since joining and the year they won their last cup:

They have yet to win the Stanley Cup in the 19 years since re-entering the NHL.

During a turbulent period that saw them carry several different names (Blueshirts, Arenas, St. Patricks) while winning the Cup twice they were renamed the Maple Leafs in 1927 by Conn Smythe. They have won eleven Cups since then. The franchise's 13 Stanley Cup wins are second only to the Canadiens. The Leafs have not won the Cup since 1967, the longest current active drought in the NHL. They are also the only “Original Six” team that has not won the Cup since the 1967 expansion.
• Vancouver Canucks – Joined the league in 1970. They have yet to win the Cup.
• Washington Capitals – Joined the league in 1974. They have yet to win the Cup.
