NHL ROOKIES: Calgary vs San Jose

I sat down at my computer last night, excited to watch some hockey. It had been months since the last time I saw the puck drop. After a summer filled with horrible hockey occurrences, it was nice to see some hockey action. Unfortunately, it came in the form of a 6 - 1 drubbing of the Calgary Flames, from the San Jose Sharks at the rookie tournament.
The Flames started out strong, out shooting San Jose at one point, 16 - 4. Althought the scoring chances were not all great, it was nice to see the Flames putting the pressure on. After a bad giveaway by Joni Ortio, Derek Inglis, made it 1-0 with a weak goal on Ortio, who's performance was less than stellar.
A few minutes letter, Michael Sgarbossa netted a nice goal top shelf on Ortio, who did not even see the puck. From there on, it was downhill. Giveaways, missed opportunities led to a medicore opening game from the Flames.
As he stated in a post-game media conference, getting used to the different ice size will be an issue for the first few games.
The rest of the night was the same, Calgary with an onslaught of shots, and the San Jose netminders, J.P Anderson and Thomas Heemskerk were stelar. I applaud both prospects.
I would also like to point out that Michael Sgarbossa played a solid game who produced a pair of points.
I was very disappointed in the play of TJ Brodie. He gave up several scoring chances to the opposing team, and had numerous offensive blunders. I expect a better performance from him tonight, as he tries to make a roster spot.
If I could point out one bright spot for the Calgary Flames, it would be Sven Bartschi. Bartschi played a great game. He was constantly producing chances, beating defenders and getting some scoring chances for himself. He even had a penalty shot, but could not capitalize.
When watching post-game interviews, it was clear that coaches, and staff were impressed by Bartschi's performance.
He played on the 2nd line last night, but tonight he has been moved up the the 1st line with Holland, and Reihnhart.
Notable additions tonight for the Flames as they take on Vancouver, are Bryan Cameron, a player that was signed last year by the Flames. Bryan recently played on Abbotsford, and before that was a part of the Barrie Colts, where he poted 53 goals.
