With Ek reporting that these 4 teams may make a pitch for Bobby Ryan. I figured it would be fun to try and make up their offers, and guess at who would win.
Columbus:
There are obvious reasons why Columbus would be interested in the three-time 30 goal scorer, and it is to get this team that Howson assembled out of the basement. Of course, it is goaltending that is the real issue for this team, not their offense, but that’s not up to me to decide at the moment. Let’s pretend Sanford is the answer to their goaltending woes, and they are still trying to win this season.
If that is the case, then Carter, Nash, Wiznewski, and Johansen are going nowhere. This is the part of the team that can’t be moved if Columbus wants to make a serious push towards the playoffs. That being the case, it would simply be prospects and picks heading back the other way.
Given their current position, the value of the CBJ’s 1st rounder this year could be pretty big. Most people have this team pegged to finish in the bottom 5 this year, and the addition of Bobby Ryan, may or may not change that. I could see a deal for Ryan being similar to that of the Kessel deal. Two 1st rounders and a 2nd could get this deal done for Columbus. The Blue Jackets get the immediate help now, while Anaheim has the chance at two picks in the top 5 and another one that could end up being in the top 30-35 range.
To make this trade, Columbus would have to send back about 2M in salary. Martinek? Huselius? Plenty of candidates, if needed.
to CLB: Bobby Ryan
to ANA: 2012 1st, 2012 2nd, 2013 1st + cap dump
Toronto:
While I see almost no chance of the leafs trading away similar to what Columbus’ offer is (at least not again), Toronto has something else that is valuable that they can spare. Depth. The leafs have plenty of capable players that could be used in a trade with Anaheim to give them the much needed offensive support to fill out their top 3 lines.
The deal would essentially be a swap of Ryan for a lesser version of Ryan along with some extra players to fill in the roles of 2nd and 3rd liners. I could see a deal similar to Kulemin, Grabovski, D’Amigo, and a 2nd for Ryan and a conditional 2nd. While neither of Kulemin or Grabovski are a direct replacement for Ryan, the two of them have some great chemisty together and would be two-thirds of a very capable second line for the Ducks. D’amigo adds a little youth, as Selanne, Koivu, and Blake, are 41, 37, and 38 respectively, and are probably set to retire within a year or so.
Kulemin has struggled so far this year, but he is a solid 2-way player, who also hit 30-goals this most recent year. While giving up Grabo and Kuli is costly, Grabovski is set to become a UFA after this year, and could easily test the market. Even after one game back from injury, you could see the creativeness of Grabovski while playing with wingers Rosehill and Dupuis. Could you imagine him playing on a line with Selanne for the rest of the year? Ridiculous.
Ryan to the Leafs adds a ton of secondary scoring and another Burkesque type player to the Leafs line-up. No more discussion needed.
to TOR: Bobby Ryan, 2013 2nd (Conditional)
to ANA: Mikhail Grabovski, Nikolai Kulemin, Jeremy D'Amigo, 2012 2nd
Minnesota:
This one is interesting. The Wild are doing remarkably well at the mo9ment and it would not be wise to tamper with what is working. If that is the case, I would only offer what is not working. Seeing as how the picks from the Wild at the moment would not be enough to entice ANA to make an offer, they would have to give up prospects or a current roster player in addition. The easiest bet? The struggling Dany Heatley. Heatley has not been himself in several years, and does not seem to be living up to expectations in Minny either. While it would be a risk to get rid of him while the Wild are accomplishing what they currently are, the chance at getting Ryan may very well be worth the risk.
Unfortunately this would not be a trade made straight up as Ryan has more value at the moment than the $7.5M per year Heatley. The trade would have to include something else to entice the Ducks, and that would most likely be in the form of picks. I think something along the lines of Healtey + 2012 1st + 2013 3rd could get this deal done. Heatley gets a fresh start (yet again) with some top end talent in Getzlaf and Perry, while Ryan sits right beside the playmaking Koivu. Another aspect of this deal could be increasing the picks given to Anaheim, and having Saku added to the trade, letting him finish off his career playing with his younger brother. Wouldn’t that be something?
to MIN: Bobby Ryan
to ANA: Dany Heatley, 2012 1st, 2013 3rd
Philidelphia:
This is a tough one. While Philly has the pieces to send back, they are so close to the cap that they would almost have to give up more salary than Ryan’s 5.4M per year. Flyer fans seem to have more of a love affair with Couturier these days than Schenn, so I feel it would be easier to say goodbye to the piece acquired in the Richard’s deal rather than the one drafter 8th overall currently playing with the club.
That takes care of some of the value, but now the salary has to match. Ryan is going to have to replace somebody on the wing, and I think the odd man out would end up being Hartnell. While he has played well this year, I do not see Jagr or JVR being shipped off in this deal, which would only leave Hartnell (because of salary). This, unfortunately would not be enough to snag Ryan, and would require some more salary and talent to head back to Anaheim. The last piece I would throw in here would be Voracek. He sends back enough salary to make this deal happen, but would then make the deal lopsided in Anaheim’s favour.
The Ducks would most likely balance this out with a pick, but nothing less than a first would suffice. The problem is that this years 1st rounder could very well end up in the top 10 and would be crippling for the Ducks to have traded way. This is why I would suggest the final deal being: Schenn, Hartnell, and Voracek for Ryan and a 2013 1st. Risky for both sides, but could pay off huge for both teams.
to PHI: Bobby Ryan, 2013 1st
to ANA: Brayden Schenn, Scott Hartnell, Jakub Voracek

Whose deal would you take? If ANA wants purely for the future, Columbus’ deal is the best bet. If they are looking for the future, but not so long term, PHI would come out on top. If they want some depth play immediately in order to balance out the offense, the Leaf’s deal is tempting. To get an immediate replacement for your top line when just trying to shake things up, Minny has a nice looking offer.
Who would you go for?
So you are guessing what the trades are, based on your guess of what the teams are, based on Eklunds guess that four teams are involved?
Exaclty.. But lets just call them my "sources"
Well written and creative. Flyers need D right now- how does that factor in for you? Also, I don't see PHI giving up 3 for 1 when they have injury problems (Jagar
Fair enough, but the point of the aritcle wasn't to address D. The whole thing was based on the fact thaht they were 'apparently' making a pitch for Ryan. If you want D, the leafs have plenty, and all it would cost is Schenn :D
It would be a great fit in Columbus. They NEED goal-scoring, and he could be a compliment for Rick Nash. Columbus needs to turn their season around soon if they want to save it. It may be a lost cause, but Columbus needs to start building a franchise so they reach the post-season in the near future and Nash and Ryan are two good players to start building around
A line of Nash-Johanseen-Ryan would be incredible for the future. Having Carter as the #2 just gives them depth, and all they need is some average production out of umberger, brassard, or maybe Huselius and they have offensive depth.. Now about the goaltending situation.....
would like to see pittsburgh get involved. although we dont have the nhl talent to trade given our place in the standings, i would be willing to trade Kennedy, Eric Tangradi, a 2nd round pick, and a prospect not named Joe Morrow or Simon Depres or Scott Harrington. dont see us getting him or even trying to. we are doing great right now plus we dont have the trade value to match some of the other teams. good article though.
Everything I am reading elsewhere is Ryan is not being shopped, but offers are being taken. Philly is intriguing, but I think you are way off in what needs to be offered, I thinkit would have to start with Brayden Coburn and branch out from there....
Nice comment from Pittsburgh... I won't trade a 1st... or a top prospect... or a scoring forward... or a top-four defenseman... but it'd be nice to get him. Frig man... I can do the same: Komisarek, Frattin, and a 2nd. Get real.
The Flyers would never agree to such a deal. First, they don't favor 3-1 deals and second, Ryan is not worth those 3 players - not right now at least.
So one guy says philosophy is not enough. Another too much..btw SuperHenders13, it won't show up because you typed too much
Damn spell correct. Philly
I like Philly's deal. Brayden Schenn is a tank.
ah okay mfreedman, didnt know that. @A-Mar, no need to sound like a prick. why would a team like pittsburgh need him? your team knows all about giving up 3-4 assets for one player. i was saying i would want him. never said we were going to get him.
to leafs for Schenn Kadir and a first rounder
Kadri**
@keyeserWhile I would do that in a second, it would take more to get him. Probably need Kulemin Schenn to start. That would be just under equal value, but Anaheim would want above equal value to get it done, so add KAdri in and they might do it.
