Is there any question that Claude Giroux is feeling better? With 1 goal and 3 assists in last night’s contest in Dallas, the young center’s play was as fiery as his hair. If you observed the injury to his head last week, you probably started seeing visions of another Pronger-like catastrophe. During the intermission report, Bill Clement gave some insight on knee to head contact that dampened my worst fears. The shin guards worn by players today have give in them due to extra padding around the knee joint. If you have ever played the game, you are grateful for the design of this equipment, especially when you wipe out in true #HarnellDown fashion. Joking aside, it seems as though the Flyers dodged a major blow to their already deflated morale by getting a seemingly healthy Giroux back into the lineup.
It was baptism by fire for Giroux last night, who survived the heated skirmishes on the ice and lead the Flyers to a 4-1 win. I’m not sure if the Eagles-Cowboys hatred bled over onto the ice last night, but there was a palpable tension between the two clubs. Despite the vitriolic tone of the game, the Flyers punished the Stars for their emotional gaffes by netting 2 goals on 5 power play chances. Philadelphia also kept their tempers under control and surprisingly only logged 18 penalty minutes, 10 of which were absorbed by the rookie defensemen Marc-Andre Bourdon for his scrap with Stars center Adam Burish.
With the solid play of Carle, Timonen and Coburn, the Flyers defensemen made a stand in last night’s game, which was ultimately capped off with a goal from the variable, Andrej Meszaros. Good defense, steady offensive pressure, and excellent goaltending from Sergei Bobrovsky helped propel the Flyers back to their winning ways. With one day off, the team will prepare for perhaps their biggest game of the month: the Rangers at Madison Square Garden, a preview to the Winter Classic.
The last time the Flyers met the Rangers was on November 26th at the Wells Fargo Center, the end result of which was a 2-0 shutout in favor of the Broadway Blueshirts. An evenly played match on the score sheet, the Flyers struggled to solve Henrik Lundqvist, who often made clutch saves look routine. The game scheduled for this Friday should provide excellent entertainment, especially since the hype behind the Winter Classic has been building with the filming of the HBO series “24/7”. If the Flyers are going to win, they need to grind out a 60 minute effort without taking careless penalties while capitalizing on the penalties to which the Rangers will hopefully fall prey. Regardless of the result, we will be guaranteed a glimpse of playoff style hockey encapsulated in the final dress rehearsal for the main event scheduled for January 2nd at Citizens Bank Park.
