In a very surprising move by Detroit GM Ken Holland, who is known as one of the best in the league, a first round pick and a prospect ( Sebastien Piche) to the Tampa Bay Lightning for defensemen Kyle Quincey.
The move was part of a 3 way trade that involved Tampa Bay Lightning sending forward Steve Downie to the Colorado Avalanche, thus the Avs sending us the young defensemen. Kyle Quincey started his career on the Red Wings but was lost on the waivers to Los Angeles Kings in 2008-09. He was thn traded to Colorado as part of a package for Ryan Smyth.
I like Quincey as a player but I really question the value of him as worth a first round pick. I don't know if Holland was being a nice guy and trying to help out Lightning GM Steve Yzerman or not. I would almost rather not doubt Holland because after all he is a very smart man and knows what he is doing. He has an act for bringing back guys that once wore the Winged wheel on their chest.
The move on defense will take the rotating combination of Jakub Kindl and Mike Commodore out of the lineup. I would much rather see Kindl suited up on a nightly basic than the shaky play of Jonathon Ericsson but Detroit needs the big body on Ericsson.
I guess only time will tell whether or not this trade will help or hurt the Wings, but having a defensemen like Quincey isn't all that bad.
