It really disgusts me to turn on either, Around the Horn, PTI, or Jim Rome is burning every day and not see one word about hockey. Any thing those shows do say about the sport, is mostly negitave, especially PTI. All negitave attention.
In a sport as great as ours, its ashame to be thrown to the bottom of the pack, below Baseball, Football, Golf, and sadly it pains me to say, a sport as worthless as basketball. How many times a day, to we hear of some NBA star going to jail for drug posession, or a NFL star going to jail for being a suspect in a murder case, or about whether or not Barry Bonds did use steriods? Way to many in my opinion.
But what we never hear, is about hockey players. You never hear of, "Former NHLer so and so is going to jail on drug posession charges" or "current NHL star so and so is a suspect of being involved in ILLEGAL DOG FIGHTING". Now Im not saying the sport is perfect, we have had our situations in the NHL, Mike Danton is prob. one of the biggest. As well as the Dany Heatley fiasco. But thats about it. Thats maybe once every few seasons. Not once every few days.
Why? Because most people in hockey are good people. You dont want your kids role model to be Mike Vick do you? Or how about Allen Iverson, who gets paid X amount of millions per year, and can't show up for practice. Or how about a player like Barry Bonds, Jason Giambi or Mark Mcguire, oh wait, they all used steriods, thats not something you want your kids to role model after is it? But Nhl'ers you sure would. Nhl players by far give the most back to the community, and take the least away. They are not involved in drug busts, murders, steriod investigatons, etc. When has there ever been a fight between two players on the same team, like the one that took place between Barett and Zambrano of the Cubs?? Never.
But you know what, thats fine. If I had to hear about the NHL every day, the same way I do with the NBA NFL, or MLB, I couldnt look at the sport the same again. Id lose respect for all the players, if I had to hear of drugs, rape, murder associated with the NHL's name. Yeah, Im sure the sport would be more popular, and more talked about, but it wouldnt be the same NHL that we all love to watch today. I couldnt imagine having players similar to Terell Owens, Michael Vick, Allen Iverson, Barry Bonds, Victor Zambrano and Michael Barrett in the NHL, and even if it means the sport staying as a fringe sport, I am extremly pleased that they are not.
I think the closest we have is maybe Ed Belfour.
altough i hate to say it there has been fight between teammates in the NHL.Quite a lot actually. Nothing serious and usually occurs during on-ice practices, but still...
