Hello, My name is Matt Rankin. As a first time user of My Hockeybuzz, my introduction would be simply say that I have been a huge Habs fan ever since I was born. I was raised in Montreal and have never missed a game in the last ten years and I would like to think my overall hockey sense and writing abilities are up to par.
My opinion and observation of the Habs this year was that they were a very disgruntled bunch. Ever since the era of Bob Gainey and Pierre Gauthier began we were fed this re-assurance that what we could call a "5 year plan" would be the savior to our organization. Instead what it did was inflict negative images amongst our organization and now what was once called a "storied and first-class organization" is now tainted and in need of a new direction.
Whether it was watching my favorite captain, Saku Koivu walk away without even a proper send-off. Trading players and not giving them the respect of letting them and their families know where they were headed until they step into the plane. Or throwing interim coach Randy Cunneyworth under the bus within his first few hours, Montreal certainly did not hold up my expectations for last year.
Last season saw many Habs fans give up and use the phrase "Fail for Nail" often. I never like seeing my hockey team fail but coming up in the bottom three might just be one of the best things that happened to Montreal over the last ten years. Many fans are still under the belief that this team has no way of making into the playoffs next year but even after the hporrible year that we had I still think this team is destined to be good. If you look at last years New Jersey Devils compared to right now, Montreal could easily be in that same situation come next year. All they needed was their young players to mature a little more and the players having off seasons like Martin Brodeur to pick up their game. Picking up Adam Larsson in the top 5 last year did help as well. This is what Montreal may need.
We have a very strong core in Pacioretty, Subban, Price and role players like Eller, Desharnais and veterans like Markov, Cole, Plekanec, Gorges and Gionta. With the amount of young talent about to enter the Hamilton system next season the futur for the Habs looks pretty bright in my eyes. Not to mention we have a chance to draft either Galchenyuk or Grigorenko (preferably Galchenyuk) in this upcoming draft which solidifies our center position. It is a bit of a compliment to the work of Bob Gainey and Pierre Gauthier but in my mind it is the little things that count. Gauthier used a panic move on almost every move he made. Montreal did not want to accept that they were not going to make the playoffs so Gauthier went out and traded an expiring contract for Tomas Kaberle which handcuffs them in a massive way.
I love this team and with all my heart I would love to see this team have success. I believe in Bergevin and his staff that they can rid of some of the contracts that handcuff our team (Gomez, Kaberle) and make little adjustments so that this team can re-gain that respect that it deserves. Here is hoping that the Montreal Canadiens can re-gain top form and become a succcess in the leagye and in the eyes of the fans again!
I know this blog is a little bit all over the place but as my first time I wanted to try and put all of my ideas into one, Thanks for reading.
