As I sat watching the NHL Draft tonight, I realized after Tampa Bay selected Slater Koekkoek tenth overall, that the Ottawa Senators would have a chance to select an extremely gifted player that many thought would not make it that far. In the four picks prior, I knew Ottawa would have a choice of Filip Forsberg, Mikhael Grigorenko, Radek Faksa, Zemgus Girgensons, Cody Ceci, Teuvo Teravainen, Olli Maatta, or any other players. I was estatic to say the least.
Going into the draft, I was hoping Ceci or Maatta would fall to he 15th spot, and they did. I am extremely grateful that some teams before had picks that some would consider as reaches (Tampa- Koekkoek, Anaheim-Lindholm, and Pittsburgh-Pouliot), which left some great players still on the board.
Ottawa had to choose Cody Ceci, and Bryan and Tim Murray knew this. Bryan said he actually tried to move up to get Ceci earlier. Ceci is a solid defenseman who was the highest scoring player at his position in the draft, while maintaining a strong defensive game. He played his junior hockey in Ottawa, with the 67’s, and he is from Orleans, a small suburban area in Ottawa. He had the largest contingent of family at the draft and all were visibly excited for him to play with his hometown team. Ceci is also reunited with Shane Prince, his teammate with the 67’s.
Ceci possesses a big shot from the point, one that would probably work great along side Erik Karlsson. I think he will have a strong rookie camp and be signed to his entry-level contract this season, but I don’t see him as NHL ready yet. Another year in the OHL, plus hopefully playing for Canada in the World Juniors will help his game progress further and be ready to step in for the 2013-2014 season. Ottawa has good defense propects like Fredrick Claesson, Jordan Fransoo, Eric Gryba, Mark Borowiecki, and Patrick Wiercioch, and this adds to it even more. He is a big player (6’2”, 205 lbs.), has a right-handed shot, and can move the puck well.
I am still so happy about this pick, and I really think that Ceci prove he was a smart pick and step into the league in the 2013 season. Very good move by the Senators, who have 6 picks left in the draft (0 in the second round, 2 in the third) and will be taking a goalie as well, too. I would have been happy with Maatta and Teravainen also, but Ceci was the player I wanted most which they could realistically draft.
