If You Must Switch: How To Avoid The Bandwagon Title

They're out there, and real fans hate them. The Bandwagon Jumpers.
How do we define a bandwagon jumper? It's really up to your own opinion I suppose, but I'm going to fill you in on my guidelines for a bandwagon jumper.
A Bandwagon Jumper is defined as a fan who displays a lack of loyalty and supports only winning teams, changing from team to team as success rises and falls.
There are fans out there that only support individual players and not teams as a whole, and that's fine. The problem, for me, lies when fans choose to only support winning teams and attempt to relish in their championships or regular season success. A common theme with bandwagon fans are the use of social media to display their "supreme loyalty" to the team that currently has one of the best records in the league. Take facebook, for example, where you may see people on your friends list changing their profile pictures to different teams each year. I've got some of those.
A Stanley Cup win for a bandwagon fan has as much weight in my books as the Dallas Stars Skate In The Crease Cup, rules are rules no matter how ridiculous and Hull was in the crease.
When you start to watch a sport you usually pick a team to follow, normally within the first two seasons of watching said sport. After the two year mark you usually consider yourself a fan of the players. The following are situations where you can legitimately switch teams without being defined as a bandwagon jumper.
Mid-Life Hockey Crisis
This is when you absolutely feel the need to leave your current team due to a distinct hatred for some of the players, coaches, management or ownership. The reasons can range from off ice activity to poor hockey related management decisions. Whatever the reason is, the following criteria for your new team must be met:
- Not a playoff team in the year of the switch
- Has not won a Stanley Cup in the last 5 years
- Did not just trade for a superstar in the last year
- Team must be chosen before the NHL Draft and Free Agency
- Not a direct rival of your former team (Spite is not a reason to choose a team)
Brand New To Hockey
If you've puttered around hockey for years but never really followed it faithfully or considered yourself a fan, this is your category. For you, the following criteria must be met:
- Team must not have gotten past the 1st Round of the playoffs.
- Has not won a Stanley Cup in the last 5 years
- Did not trade for a superstar since you started your hunt for a team
- Team must be chosen before the NHL Draft and Free Agency
- Not a direct rival of your father, brother, mother, sister, hockey friend. (Spite is not a reason to choose a team)
Your Team Relocated Or Folded
When you are a fan of a franchise and that franchise moves or folds you will be considered a fan free agent. Maybe you were an Atlanta Thrashers fan and you don't like Winnipeg, you shouldn't be forced to accompany the team on the move. You have the least amount of milestones to hit for your new team. Here's the criteria for your switch:
- Team must not have won a Stanley Cup in the last 3 years
- Not a direct rival of your former team (Spite is not a reason to choose a team)
- Team must be chosen before Free Agency (Take the draft to finalize your assessment)
There are no other acceptable situations to switch teams. Make a careful decision when switching, because you only get one...unless you're the bad luck charm for teams and you have another relocation or fold attached to your resume. The common theme between the three options is that spite isn't a reason to pick a team. If you choose one for spite then you most likely will be making a switch down the road, and you will be considered a jumper, so don't do it.
If you are a fan of the Penguins or Capitals, you better have met one of the above choices and all their criteria. Remember, you can be fans of players on other teams while still being loyal to your team. You don't have to make a full switch because your team sucks and Crosby or Ovechkin are in the league now.
My whole point is that Bandwagon Jumping is unacceptable behavior and those people should be called out in sports bars, amongst friends and family, and any other place where they will be ridiculed.
