Coyotes Dethrone Kings

The Phoenix Coyotes took on the Los Angeles Kings last night at Jobing.com Arena in the second math up between the two teams this season. The Kings were coming off a victory over the Flames the night before.
The first period was all Coyotes pretty much. It was clear that they took advantage of their two day rest while the Kings suffered from their back to back game. The scoring opened up at 9:25 in when Mikkel Boedker carried the puck into the high slot and sniped it low blocker side on Quick. It was a very important goal for the Coyotes. When scoring the first goal, they have a 107-13-16 record when scoring first since 2009. The Coyotes continued their strong play until Derek Morris made a nice shot/pass to Shane Doan for a tip in goal. The period ended with the Yotes up 2-0.
The second period picked up where the first left off. Three minutes into the period, Boedker found his way into the slot again during a Coyotes power play and scored once again to increase the lead to three goals. It’s nice to see the Yotes finally shoot during power plays, and even nicer to watch them convert one. Eight minutes after that, Shane Doan pulled a Pavel Datsyuk move out of his repertoire by stealing the puck off a Kings player’s stick and putting a shot on net that resulted in a nice rebound for Raffi Torres to put home for the four goal lead. At this point, many would assume that the game was pretty much over. However, the Kings found themselves on the power play and Mike Richards fired a wonky shot past Mike Smith to give the Kings a goal and a little bit of hope. The period ended with the score at 4-1 in the Coyote’s favor.
The third period saw the play even out a little bit more. Just under 5 minutes into the period, the Kings converted another power play goal when Dustin Brown put in his 9th goal of the year to make it more of a game. This would not last too long though as David Moss and Rob Klinkhammer combined to force a two on one going into the King’s zone. Klinkhammer skated the puck in and sniped his second goal in as many games to put the nail in the coffin. 5-2 would end up being the final score of the game.
There were a couple very nice things to see about this game as a Coyotes fan. First of all, one has to be encouraged by Boedker’s play. If he is able to shoot more often and create like he did tonight, he could really turn into a force to be reckoned with. Furthermore, Rob Klinkhammer continued his solid play and, in my opinion, really showed he deserves to stay up with the club. He brought down the Hammer once again… ha. Another good sign is that Doan is getting goals and points and he honestly has not even hit his stride yet.
A couple of interesting side notes…. The Coyotes’ record with Matthew Lombardi in the lineup is 4-7-1 with him and 9-3-2 without him. I don’t quite know why we end up playing much better without him in, but it’s interesting to say the least. Jake Muzzin on the LA Kings got called for three penalties in last night’s game. One of which was converted to give the Yotes a 3-0 lead. He really did not help his team out by taking those penalties and I am sure he shan't be doing that again soon.
My three stars of this game go as follows: Third star is Mike Smith. He made a couple of key saves and played a solid game. This slot was kind of open season, and many players could easily have been the third star last night. The second star was Shane Doan. He contributed heavily with a couple of points last night and solid play. The kind of play one expects from Captain Coyote. First star is Mikkel Boedker. He played a very solid game and one can only hope he can keep it up!
The Coyotes will begin a four game road trip staring in St. Louis on Thursday. Everyone have a good day!
