In the midst of a 5 game losing streak, the Leafs battled the Lightning on Wednesday night at the ACC in front of a crowd of 19,433. The leafs got on the board early in the first with Lupul's 3rd on a beautiful pass by Kadri, Lupul's 3rd in 2 games since his comeback from injury. Under a minute into the 2nd period Dion Phaneuf scored his 5th of the year with a slap shot from the blue line that snuck past Garon. 5 minutes later Bozak was left all alone in the slot and snapped the puck past Garon for the eventual game winner. Later on that period Toronto would extend the lead to 4-0 with Kulemin's 4th of the year, and yet another assist by Kadri (his 3rd of the night). The leafs headed into the 3rd with a 4-0 lead and seemed to have control of the game, but the Lightning came back with 2 goals in the 3rd by Gudas and Conacher, and a Stamkos snapper hit the post late in the 3rd could have made it a one goal game. In the end Toronto would hold onto the lead and win with the final being 4-2 Leafs. Reimer was in net for the win and looked a lot more comfortable than his previous starts, letting in 2 goals on 28 shots.
Overall the leafs played a solid game and held onto the win, snapping their 5 game losing streak and holding onto their 6th place in the Eastern Standings. Its an understatement to suggest that this was a must win for the Leafs, their position in the playoffs was beginning to be in jeopardy and thoughts of last seasons late collapse was beginning to creep into the minds of those around the team.
Lupul has arguably been the leafs best player since his return, not just with his scoring but with his overall game. The talk after the game was hit on Hedman, and now has a hearing with Shanahan regarding a possibly suspension.
The Maple Leafs are now 16-12-2 and are in 6th place in the East with 34 points. Also with the win at home the leafs are now above 500. for the first time this year and will face the Buffalo Sabres Thursday Night.
