With the recent trading of Flames icon and captain Jarome Iginla, there is no doubt that Calgary management have made it clear they intend to rebuild or "retool" as they calling it. Bouwmeester will almost certainly yield a larger return for the Flames than Iginla and here's why

Jay Bouwmeester is arguably one of the best defenceman that could be had for the right price before the trade deadline on Wednesday. After having seasons of 3,4 and 5 goals respectively in full 82 game seasons for the past 3 seasons, Bouwmeester has 6 goals in just 32 games this season. He has looked like the Bouwmeester that the Flames thought they were acquiring 4 years ago from the Florida Panthers, thanks in part to the creative coaching style of Bob Hartley.

Bouwmeester also has 1 year remaining on his contract in which he will be owed 6.68 million next season. With the salary cap dropping for the 2013-2014 season this may scare some teams off but for those wanting a minute eating, puck moving defenceman that can play at both ends of the ice, they will almost certainly kick the tires on Jay Bouwmeester. Let's take a look at 5 possible destinations for Bouwmeester and what return he may yield.

1 - Detroit Red Wings (6th in the West)

Reason: In an offseason in which the Wings lost both their long standing captain Nicklas Lidtsrom (to retirement) and Brad Stuart ( to trade), their back end had a much different look to start this season. Outside of Niklas Kronwall, Detroit has no true offensive defenceman that can get the puck to their skilled forwards and no defenceman that can help eat minutes like Bouwmeester can. Many hockey analysts pegged the Wings to be a fringe playoff team this season but as Holland normally does has his Wings in the mix of a playoff race in the West.

Return: 1st Round Pick, Brendan Smith, Petr Mrazek

2 - St. Louis Blues (8th in the West)

Reason: Alex Petriangelo is one of the best young defenceman in the league and many hockey analysts believe that with a veteran defenceman that can play at both ends of the ice playing alongside of him would allow him to excel his game. The Blues also have one of the youngest, deepest teams at forward in the entire league but don't have enough puck moving defenceman to get them the puck. With the Blues the healthiest they've been all season they are looking to add a defenceman to make a playoff run.

Return: 1st Round Pick, Brian Elliotr

3 - Ottawa Senators (5th in the East)

Reason: In a season that has seen all of their star players (most notibly Erik Karlsson) dessimated by injuries, the Senators have played above expectations sitting in 5th in the East. Although Jay Bouwmeester is no Erik Karlsson he does have similarities in his skating ability and puck distribution abilities. Bouwmeester would add a veteran presence to a playoff roster that would desperately need it as well as provide a decent top line pairing with Karlsson to start next season.

Return: 1st round pick, Ben Bishop

4 - Los Angeles Kings (5th in the West)

Reason: The Los Angeles Kings are the defending Stanley Cup Champions who are sitting in a mediocre 5th place in the Western Conference. Outside of Drew Doughty the Kings have little to no offensive contribution from the back end. Bouwmeester could add a veteran presence to the Kings for another long playoff run and help alleviate some of the pressure placed on Doughty to move the puck. Bouwmeester would also help the Kings current veteran shut down defenders in their own end.

Return: 1st round pick, Tyler Toffoli, Alec Martinez

5 - Edmonton Oilers (11th in the West)

Reason: Although a trade between the 2 Albertan rivals is highly unlikely, this is a move that makes sense for both teams. The Oilers have young talented forwards that could rival that of any team. However, outside of Justin Schultz, they have no puck distrubuting defenceman that can get their skilled forwards the puck. With Bouwmeester's puck moving skills and ability to take care of the puck in both ends of the ice he would be a nice fit on the young Oiler's squad.

Return: 1st round pick, Magnas Paajarvi, Oscar Klefbom

HILARIOUS!!!! you are so out of it, nobody is tossing around a 1st this season, the value of 1st rounders is way too high right now, thats the most you are going to get out of any team for JBo, just a first, so leave all the extra players out of it unless you want like a low end prospect!

You clearly know nothing about hockey....the oilers would never even consider giving you PRV and Klefbom for J-Bo...let alone a first...

Looks like Calgary got that 1st rounder for Bouwmeester. Im sure everyone who commented earlier will be back tomorrow morning to apologize for questioning your sanity

Calgary only got that first rounder if the Blues miss the playoffs.
April 1, 2013 11:50 PM ET | Delete
Not true, if Blues make playoffs their first goes to Calgary. If Blues miss playoffs their 2014 first goes to Flames. Either way Calgary gets a first in the deal

All they really got was that first rounder. Cundari MIGHT be a 5/6 NHL D-man, and Reto Barra is a 2006 unsigned draft pick of the Blues.

Yep, mistyped that, still they got a first rounder and little else.

Lol, not quite the return you were hoping for. The 1st is a given, but two longshot prospects instead of guys like bishop, mps, klefbom, toffoli, ect
