Opposed to the Draft Lottery

I will apologize ahead of time for the lack of writing skills.
With the Florida Panthers winning the draft lottery and a good chance that they take Ekblad #1, the Sabres plans should not be affected. Even so, I would have to say the lottery is a poor way of handing out that first pick. Let me run something by you while I strongly encourage feedback. My proposition sounds great in my head, but I'm sure someone more educated will instantly change that. Isn't that what blogging is about though?
Let's choose a firm date, such as the trade deadline. Take every team this is out of a playoff spot at that time and start a point system from that date on. Whomever finishes with the most points during that stretch gets the first pick. Normally, the order afterwards will stay to tradition; the worst team getting the 2nd pick and so on.
Now my justification.
This will prevent tanking towards the end of the season. It can also cause some very interesting trades even for the teams that don't plan on making playoffs in the current season. Could you imagine the Sabres being in the same scenario next year, and in doing so, justify watching each game with hopes of winning for the prize of McDavid? How about the years that the Sabres got in the playoffs by sneaking in? They would be rewarded for not being in the playoffs at the deadline, winning enough to just get in, and still being rewarded with the 1st overall. It would help teams from consistently being just good enough to make playoffs but not good enough to make that run to still improve. They get rewarded by fighting to get in.
One objection is that this method may keep the bottom dwellers at the bottom. Countering that thought, it will at least give them some kind of chance to control their destiny rather than leaving it up to their bingo number being called for the 'coverall.' The worst team will still get #2 overall, which should help them improve nonetheless.
I believe this could increase viewer ratings regardless of the team's position during the last stretch of the season. It may also throw some wild trades before the deadline while also preventing teams from snagging rentals to a certain extent.
