Okay so this I believe is my first blog and how this has come about is I was talking with a buddy of mine about the Leafs and what they should do this off-season (as I'm sure the majority of leafs fans are). So we were talking about trades and the recent rumours about O'Rielly, the 1st overall, and everything in between. Then we got talking about a series of trades that if they all happened would be absolutely amazing for the leafs but also they are not unrealistic in happening in our opinion. So here are the trades that we thought of. Keep in mind this would be a perfect world situation and I seriously doubt this will happen but it is a very cool thing to think about.
first trade Toronto trades:
Kadri + 8th overall 2014
Colorado Trades: O'Rielly + 23rd overall 2014
I think this works for both teams in the fact that both players are comparable in ability and stats but I think Kadri has the potential to have a higher goal scoring potential but as of right now O'Rielly is the safer bet therefore Toronto as to sweeten the pot a bit with the 8th but not so much so that they deserve to get Colorado's 1st round pick. Plus Colorado gets Kadri at a decent salary and don't have to worry about more contract negotiations for a bit.
Second Trade
Toronto Trades:
Phaneuf + TJ Brennan + 23rd Overall
Florida Trades:
1st overall 2014
This gets Toronto the culture change that they seem to want desperately. While also giving them the chance to draft one of the top 3 players. I'm thinking Ekblad to shore of the defence just in case the next part of this dream situation didn't workout. This gives Florida the players that are ready to play now that they are looking for so that they can compete for a playoff spot next year. Gives them Phaneuf who can play 20 minutes a night a TJ Brennan who the leafs don't need because he's Rielly/Gardner light. But allowing him to potentially learn from Campbell as well as giving florida another puck moving offensive defensemen. It also works for Toronto because they get to keep adding good prospects to their system which still needs some depth/blue chip prospects.
Third Part Free Agency:
Toronto signs:
Brooks Orpik and Dan Boyle
Toronto signs these guys and for max 2 year deals just to shore up the defence and the minutes being lost by trading Phaneuf (as much as get gets ripped on still need to replace those minutes). This buys Toronto more time to get the young guys to develop and play with some protection around them. Plus brings in the experience needed to hopefully avoid a collapse as both have been playing playoff hockey for a long time now. Also could free up Franson to be traded to help out with the forward depth. Sign Komorov as well he was missed more than I think they expected this year.
Re-Sign:
Bolland (1-2 year deal only if you don't sign Komorov) see how he does on the repaired ankle and McClement same as Bolland short term deal. Also resign Mason Raymond (speed kills and he's got buckets of it)rnrnSo the Line up would now look like...

So it definitely achieves the culture change and because all the new guys aren't locked down longterm it fits for the future as well as gaining top prospect in Ekblad the defence will be solid and enviable in 3 years with Rielly, Gardner, Ekblad and potential Franson as your core moving forward.rnrnAnyway just a cool couple of scenarios that if it was a perfect world might happen. I like all of it except i wouldnt sign boyle just because id rather tank and hoe to get 1st overall pick but agree trading phaneuf and and try tanking o Reilly would be nice but not at a cost of our first maybe kadri plus a prospect and a few seconds Kadri has to much upside to be taken so lightly
that second trade is horrifying for Florida. Why is Brenna worth anything? Traded for a 5th?
You would rather tank and get first overall, tells what type of "man" you truly are.

Lots of criticism, no ideas of their own...The Florida trade is interesting, and I think some sense can be made of it for Florida. They would get a scoring defenseman (not necessarily a top pair) in Phaneuf that can play against top lines and eat major minutes for a team that needs a player in that role. TJ Brennan was a top D-man in the AHL so learning from some players like Phaneuf and Campbell could really benefit him and provide more depth in an organization that is looking for players like him. The 23rd overall from Colorado is interesting incentive that could be used to bring in another forward for their AHL team for now. It is more just there to recoup the loss of the first overall. So in the end they get a top 4 defenceman, a solid AHL defence prospect that could be ready to handle NHL minutes and a potential future forward. I think for this to happen the Leafs may need to include another pick, while the panthers would need to send back a contract to balance things out a bit.And at no point should they tank the season. Not with the Toronto fan base.

Why on earth would Florida give up the 1st for that. Typical leafs fan overvaluing what they have. Nice try.
