This is just a list of Toronto Maple Leaf Players with 1-way contracts. If you add goaltenders Jonathan Bernier and James Reimer, that put this group at 27 1-way contracts. Then you factor in the notion made by team president, Brendan Shanahan, that there will be open spots to create competition and opportunities given to those within the system. like Josh Lievo, Petter Granberg, Greg McKegg, Sam Carrick, Andrew MacWilliam, Jamie Devane and recent 8th overall draftee William Nylander. Needless to say the Leafs aren't without options. Frazer MacLaren and Colton Orr will most likely be demoted and put on waivers so they can play regularly with the AHL Marlies and be called upon if needed by the big club. Same can be said for Korbinian Holzer. That leaves 16 forwards and 6 defencemen with 1-way contracts. Usually NHL clubs carry 14 forwards, 7 defencemen and 2 goalies. This Notion leads me to believe a trade is coming with the Leafs sending a package of players, hopefully for one stud NHLer who is either a #1 centre or defenceman. This reminds me of the 1998 off-season where Toronto had 2 stud goaltenders, one of which wanted another opportunity to be a starter for another club after taking the Leafs into the postseason and into a Conference final. sound familiar? Aside from the Conference final. Along with the goalie controversy the Leafs in '98 also had a rounded defense corp with Dmitry Yushkevich, Danny Markov, Yanic Trembley, Sylvain Cote and super-star Jason Smith, with prospects Thomas Kaberle waiting in the cellar for a chance to show his young talent. Almost too similar to the crop the leafs currently employ.
