Evander Kane jets to Buffalo

There has been a lot of trade rumors about Evander Kane this season. The Vancouver native became a real problem for the Jets and it was only a matter of time before he’d be shipped off to another team. That team just so happened to be the lowly Buffalo Sabres. Sitting at last place in the NHL, Buffalo is king of the hill when it comes to trade rumors. Their most valuable players, 6’8” defenseman saw his time in Buffalo come to a close today. The Winnipeg Jets traded Evander Kane, Zach Bogosian, and Jason Kasdorf to Buffalo for Tyler Myers, Drew Stafford, Joel Armia, Brendan Lemieux, and a late 1st round draft pick. The first truly big trade of the season includes some major names like. Here’s a little overview on Kane, Bogosian, Myers, and Stafford.
Evander Kane was just recently announced by the Jets prior to the trade that he would be out for the remainder of the season. He was a problem for the Jets, not having the right attitude is a big deal. Kane also was a healthy scratch last week. His attitde was a concern for many teams, but Buffalo decided to take a chance on him. He potted 10 goals and 12 assists in 37 games with the Jets for a sub-par season. If Kane can change his mindset he is capable of being a great player. A change in scenery could do just that.
Zach Bogosian was drafted 3rd overall by the Atlanta Thrashers (now the Winnipeg Jets) in 2008. He hasn’t yet achieved what most thought he would coming into the NHL. He is still a solid defenseman though, and at 24, he still has time to progress. The worry is that in seven years in the NHL, he has not reached stardom when the hype around him entering the 2008 draft was astronomical. It doesn’t seem like that big of a problem but if you look at the two defensemen he was selected between, Drew Doughty (2) and Alex Pietrangelo (4), you understand it a little better. This year, he’s totaled 3 goals and 10 assists in 41 games for the Jets.
Tyler Myers is another defenseman that was selected in the 2008 draft. Standing at 6’8” he is the second tallest player in the NHL, only behind 6’9” Boston Bruins’ captain, Zdeno Chara. The lengthy defenseman also won the Calder Memorial Trophy his rookie year. He hasn’t had much help around him in Buffalo, and was the leader on their defensive core from the time he stepped into the league. Moving to the Jets allows Myers to learn from one of the more veteran and offensive defenseman , Dustin Byfuglien . At 25 years old, he has time to develop and improve his game like Bogosian. The Jets brought in a big defenseman who can help them make a playoff push late in the season.
Drew Stafford is veteran winger that had played nine seasons in Buffalo, his whole career. He is the oldest piece in this trade at 29. Stafford has never put up huge numbers in his career, his high being 52 points in 2010-11 in which he only played 62 games. An unrestricted free agent this season, Stafford could possibly be off elsewhere when the season is over. The Jets however added a great depth player who can play both ends of the ice and will slot either in the 2nd or 3rd line of the Winnipeg Jets.
