3 places the Penguins need to improve at the trade deadline

Two-way defenseman: Since the loss of young offensive defenseman Olli Maata for the season, the Pens have been looking for somebody that can fill the need of a two-way defenseman. With Paul Martin likely to leave in free-agency this summer, Pittsburgh needs a replacement. A two-way defenseman would also shore up the blue line on the struggling power play. A D-man that can quarterback the power play from the blue line would do a lot for the success of the man-advantage unit.
Depth: The Penguins acquired multiple pieces in the offseason that helped their depth. Steve Downie, Blake Comeau, and Nick Spaling helped, but the Pens still need another piece to add more offense to the fourth line. Craig Adams and Zack Sill have done what their supposed to do, but the Pens would love to put some offense on that fourth line.
Middle-six forward: GM Jim Rutherford has been looking to add more skill to an already-talented crop of middle-six forwards. If Beau Bennett continues to struggle, than a second-line winger may be a need for Pittsburgh. Rutherford has reportedly made an offer for Carolina’s Jiri Tlusty, who Rutherford acquired himself while with the Canes. The 26 year-old was a teammate of third-line center Brandon Sutter before Sutter was traded for Jordan Staal three years ago. Putting Sutter and Tlusty together would cause matchup problems for opponents. Now that the Hurricanes are out of contention, Rutherford could attempt to acquire him.
