Steen scores OT winner as Blues beat Penguins 3-2

Despite the solid play of goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury and the Penguins’ much better play in this game than in other recent games, the Pens failed to pull off a victory at home against the Blues. They had a 2-0 lead at 8:58 of the second period, but two former Pens negated that advantage.
After Steve Downie’s goal made it 2-0 midway through the second period, Blues trade acquisition Robert Bortuzzo, from Pittsburgh, snapped it past Fleury to cut the lead in half. He got assists from TJ Oshie and Barret Jackman. The Blues’ second goal was netted by another former Penguin, center Marcel Goc, with helpers from Ryan Reaves and Steve Ott. Bortuzzo and Goc are the seventh and eighth former Penguins to score against them this season.
The most important goal of the game, the overtime winner, was scored by St. Louis’s Alexander Steen, who redirected a Zbnynek Michalek slap shot past Fleury on the glove side. It went in just 35 seconds into the five minute OT period.
Star forwards Patric Hornqvist and Evgeni Malkin were each out again against St. Louis. It is unknown when they will return, although it is expected to be somewhat shortly.
Pittsburgh dressed seven defenseman and 11 forwards, and it turns out they would need all seven of them. Christian Erhoff, who sat out Saturday’s game against Arizona, would exit the game with a presumed head injury after crashing into the boards.
They recalled defenseman Derrick Pouliot from their AHL affiliate Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
The Penguins’ first goal was scored by Blake Comeau. It was set up by Daniel Winnik, who’s reaching stick managed to sweep the puck towards the front of the net, where Comeau was. The former Blue Jacket fired it past goaltender Jake Allen from short range.
The win kept the Penguins at third in the Metropolitan Division, three points ahead of the Washington Capitals.
The Penguins next game is in Raleigh against the Carolina Hurricanes on Thursday.
