First and foremost I am a Canucks fan, so I feel like this trade proposal is unbiased and I've tried to make it as fair as possible without knowing what the team's GM's involved think and feel about said players in the trade. When I look at what the teams will get in the end I feel like it works for everyone, but I want opinions so I can either A: Feel good about my hockey thought process B: Feel like an idiot for trying to come up with a Leafs trade proposal or C: a bit of both

Lets hop right in -

Trade 1: Arizona Coyotes trade 2015 3rd overall pick, Lucas Lessio and Jordan Szwarz (two early 20 something year old's on the doorstep of NHL 2nd or 3rd line careers) to the Carolina Hurricanes for 2015 3rd overall pick and Jeff Skinner (large salary, often injured, amazing potential if paired with the right linemates)

Trade 2: Carolina Hurricanes trade 2015 3rd overall pick (from Arizona), Roland McKeown and Brock McGinn (two B prospects) to the Toronto Maple Leafs for 2015 24th overall pick (Nashville), Phil Kessel and Sam Carrick.

Toronto drafts Dylan Strome and Mitch Marner 3rd and 4th (two guys who have played together and know each other) and get two pretty good prospects in McKeown and McGinn.

Arizona drafts Hanifin 5th overall (to possibly replace Yandle even though they have good defence it can always get better) they have a lot of good young forwards developing in Domi, Bunting, Dauphin, Duclair, Dvorak, Perlini, Samuelsson and Shinimin, so this makes sense. And they get Jeff Skinner who could have a bounce back year.

Carolina, while letting go of some good prospects, get larger up front with Lessio, who could turn into a good goal scorer, Szwarz could be a good bottom 6 option this year, Sam Carrick (brother of Trevor Carrick) because Carolina likes family ties, they get a pretty good prospects at 24 (names like Sprong, Merkley, Bitner, Chlapik, Roy appear) and they get the best player in the deal in Phil Kessel.

I know it is a lot.. trades like this rarely if ever happen, but does it make sense? Or is there a clear loser and a clear winner here? To me when I read it, it all seems to make too much sense for where the teams currently are. I thought maybe Carolina gave up a bit too much, but they'd be getting a 40 goal scorer and staying in the first round of this years draft. Thoughts?

No. It does not make sense. IMO.

Good effort. Is not in the realm of the impossible. Only issue is not many teams wiling to do a multi player deal with youth in case they end up trading away hidden gems.

im hearing from a close friend who works in Edmonton (For the oilers promotion dept) hes hearing the oilers are really trying to get Phaneuf..offering I believe the 16 pick in the first round or Yakapov.....im sure the leafs will have to give up more then just Dion but apparently Edmonton wants him bad

I really doubt Edmonton wants Phaneuf unless Tor retains a lot of that salary

I definitely see potential in a edm/tor swap for d man or goalie. Wonder if theres any way we can get draisatl since theyll have rnh and mcdavid....

I personally would give up Phaneuf,(retain half of his salary for like 4 yrs,) offer Romam Polak(hate to see him go) and say Kadri ,next yrs 2nd and 3rd and this yrs 3rd for Draiatl

One deal I could see would be shipping Kessel off to Tampa to play with Stamkos and bring in Drouin and maybe another prospect ...were getting a young stud (hopfully) and Tampa is getting Kessel(playing with Stamkos id say hes good for 40 goals)

I would like to see the Leafs make a deal to move somewhere into the 5-12 draft slots or if possible two moves for two spots. With these picks I feel the Leafs should target players such as; Hannifin, Barzal, Provorov, Zacha and Crouse. All of these players have tremendous long-term upside and combined with their pick, Reilly, Nylander give the Leafs a really solid core of young talent. As I see it all the teams (except CBJ) in those draft positions (5-12) could use either of Kessel or Phaneuf. Kessel would really fit the needs of Car (5), NJ (6), SJ (9) or FLA (11). Phaneuf would really help the d cores of PHI (7), COL (10) or DAL (12). Here are few proposals Shanny and co. should consider ;) To Tor: 5th, SeminTo Car: Kessel, mid-range prospect, 2015 3rdTo Tor: 6th, CloweTo NJ: Kessel, 2015 3rdTo Tor: 9thTo SJ: KesselSJ trades Marleau to Montreal to create cap space. To Tor: 11th, Boyes, 2016 2nd or 3rdTo Fla: KesselTo Tor: 7th, UmbergerTo Phi: Phaneuf, 2016 4thTo Tor: 10thTo Col: Phaneuf, Leipsic, 2016 3rdTo Tor: 12thTo Dal: Phaneuf, 2015 3rdIn many of these proposals some salary or mid to low level prospects could also be included to balance things out a bit. All in all, I would just really like to see the Leafs get a pick or two more in the top 12 this year. It should be an exciting few weeks of rumours leading up to the draft.

Yeah I thought people might think Carolina lost in this trade, but I know some people who say "whoever gets the best player in the trade wins," and arguments could be made that Kessel is the best (sure thing) player in the trade.
